GUJRAT: The syndicate of the University of Gujrat has formally approved the establishment of the College of Veterinary Sciences and Livestock Management initially at one of its constituent college buildings of the city campus.

The Punjab government has been asked by the UoG administration to provide a sum of Rs15 million for the initiation of academic activities in the college at the earliest.

The College of Veterinary Sciences and Livestock Management had been planned to be established in the Rakh Pabbi Sarkar area between Kharian and Sara-i-Alamgir along GT Road.

The Punjab government has already been asked to approve the allocation of at least 300 acres of the state land in the Pabbi area.

An UoG official said the main campus of the veterinary college would be set up in the Pabbi area, but the syndicate approved a suggestion that academic activities should be started at one of the dedicated blocks of the Government Science College for Boys, one of the three constituent colleges of the UoG and known as the city campus.

MNA Jaafar Iqbal, also a syndicate member of the UoG, and Punjab Higher Education Commission chairman Prof Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin had floated an idea of setting up a veterinary college when Dr Nizam had been the UoG vice-chancellor about a year ago.

However, the approval from the syndicate has been a major breakthrough and it is decided to start classes in the current year. Courses are also being selected while the initial funds of Rs15 million for making the veterinary college functional has also been sought from the Punjab government.
