LAHORE: Punjab University securing 314 and 283 points won both men and women Inter-varsity Athletics Championships here at the Wapda Sports Complex on Monday.

Around 600 male and female athletes of 48 universities from across the country took part in the championships.

PU’s Farhan Haider with 52 points was declared the best athlete in men’s category.

University Central Punjab Lahore secured second position with 298 points while the Government College University, Faisalabad came third (69 points).

In women’s category, Musarrat Shaheen from Sargodha University was declared best athlete with 60 points while Punjab University (283 points) was declared overall champions of the women’s event.

The Lahore College for Women University secured second position (161.5 points) and Sargodha University grabbed third (146). Addressing the closing ceremony, Acting Director Sports Shamsa Hashmi said PU athletes had shown outstanding performance in all sports because of encouragement of Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran. Later, she distributed cash prizes among the winners.

Meanwhile, Punjab University Department of Special Education is organising a two-day annual Sports Gala featuring special students in different sports.

The inauguration ceremony of the gala will be held on Tuesday at 10:00am at the PU premises. Dean Faculty of Law Prof Dr Shazia Naureen Qureshi will be the chief guest on the occasion.
