Resolution on Yemen is Pakistan's internal matter: Saudi minister

ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia Minister for Religious Affairs Sheikh Saleh bin Abdul Aziz on Sunday said the Pakistan Parliament’s resolution on Yemen was the country’s internal matter. But the Saudi minister did go on to say that his country expects better from Pakistan.

Abdul Aziz, along with a five-member delegation, arrived in Pakistan on Sunday to discuss the situation in Yemen and to further ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Abdul Aziz said Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are brotherly countries who have come out to help each other in the past. He said the relationship between the two countries will remain strong going forward.

Ever since the Saudi-led alliance began its offensive against Houthi rebels in Yemen, Pakistan has been under immense pressure from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for military support in the region.

Since then, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has chaired several high-level meetings with civil and military officials to determine Pakistan’s involvement in the conflict. While the government has clearly stated it will defend Saudi Arabia’s “territorial integrity,” it is yet to commit troops and resources to the Saudi-led offensive in Yemen.

On Friday, a joint session of the Parliament, summoned by premier Nawaz Sharif to debate Pakistan’s involvement in Yemen, called for Pakistan taking a neutral stance in the war.

While this resolution seems to resonate a majority opinion in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies want Pakistan to stand by their side and partake in the ground and air offensive against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Iran has threatened the very existence of Arabs because of successes in Syria, Lebanon , Iraq and Yemen. Pakistan being a close ally of Arabs should support them so that they over come this threat from Iran.

Saudi Arabia has just had an inter-generational transfer of power. The older generation would likely not have invaded Yemen, but this new younger generation of Saudi leaders are a bunch of youthful hotheads who shoot first and think later. That is why they readily chose the military response to the ascendancy of the Houthis in Yemen and their overall conduct in their foreign policy is quite undiplomatic. No doubt they have pressured Pakistan heavily, but what did they really expect from the country? The old Saudi leadership would never have made such a demand of Pakistan, and if they had, the Pakistani rejection would not have surprised or angered them.

They are bombing rebels in Yemen, they don't need support from Pakistan Army. They are just dragging Pakistan in the conflict to keep us away from Iran specially in the aftermath of US and Iran nuclear deal. Israel is regional threat but they don't have guts to show the same aggression against them but only bombing poor Yemen. Instead of committing troops for defending these monarchs, Pakistan should bomb all these royal families of middle east. More than half problems of Muslim world will be solved automatically. We simply need to make it clear to him and to anyone else who has any interest in this matter like the UAE minister that Paistan will not hesitate to send troops to defend any brotherly ountry but will not become part of any aggression.

Pakistani press should immediately stop calling the Houthis as REBELS.Houthis are a very large tribe of Yemen who have been denied their legitimate rights by pro-Saudi puppet governments for decades.This conflict has nothing to do with SHIA/SUNNI schools of thought.Obviously they expect MORE from Pakistan,a KASHKOL carrying country which has been filled by Saudis in more than one ways.This war is only to protect family rule of the GCC monarchies,period.Time to realize,when you take billions,they want your soldiers to die for them.Sab Se Pahley Pakistan.

This hard bump in the GCC / Pakistan relations is very good for Pakistan. It has let dawn on them that pakistan , contrary to perception, is not to be treated as a gun for hire or standing by to jump at their call. Pakistan has shown to them, that it is to be treated with respect and consulted before making announcements, not the other way round.

The pronouncements from this Sheikh and the the one from the UAE, Mr. Gargash, should be a wake-up call for every Pakistani. Pakistan's interests lie in our neighborhood. We should be good friends with our neighbors, including India, in that will lie our strength. The glitter of Saudia and the other oil-rich Arab states is just that: glitter. The know-how and the brains there are all Western. Now that Saudia and other GCC countries have collected their toys of war, they need someone to operate these for them in order to project their power. This will be their undoing. Pakistan would do well to stay away, but we need leaders of grit and a spine. Not Nawaz and Zardari and their henchmen; let them go to the Gulf to protect their wealth that is now in danger.

@AMJAD KHAN Aden was British territory centuries before Pakistan was born, and their relationship with Hassidic Jews living there goes back to the time of the prophet Jesus. All their tribes traded with Africa since early Roman times and are a dark people of partly African heritage themselves. My best friend from Yemen is an orthodontist in Dubai who would be too black for polite society in Pakistan. Until you found out his family are rich Sunnis, of course.

Interestingly , no one seems to think US-Iran pact has anything to do with Pakistan's stance on troops involvement. Oil, US,Iran, Saudi, Russia, China. Pakistan is in a very difficult situation but may have been told not to side with Saudi. Why suddenly a billion dollar arms approval from US for Pakistan? Pakistan could never say 'no' to Saudi had it not been pressured to do so.Pakistan was and is not free in taking decisions. Lets see how events take the turn.

Pakistan needs to take a firm stand on this matter. I am not a support of Sharifs but I will support this parliament if they stick to this stance. These "brotherly" countries know quite well that Pakistani army is already stretched out on all borders and is fighting a war against those whose ideology is supported by these Middle Eastern countries. But, because they do not care about anyone but themselves, they are still pressurizing Pakistan to blindly jump into their mess. Welcome to the world of "what goes around comes around".

No doubt, Pakistani govt is facing a dilemma. They already have two hot borders, their forces are stretched thin, and simply cannot afford to become involved in something like Yemen. But then everytime Pakistan needed some monetary or other forms of support, they went running to the Arabs, mainly the Saudis AMD UAE. And now, it is time to pay something back.

As an Arab I never viewed our alliance with Pakistan for granted. While I do respect their decision I have to say that I expected at least to have Pakistan offer support in air strikes which would be something safe. It's more about an actual stance rather than support. The U.S. has actually participated in the assault with intelligence and surveillance in addition to the supplied ammunition. It was rather a shock that Pakistan didn't offer anything at all and refused to participate in anyway in this coalition. Refusing to commit troops is one thing, but refusing to participate at all is another.

@PakCanuck Pakistani army is not for rent, I could not agree more. But Pakistani politicians are. Those very politicians who have been 'elected' by Pakistani people. According to Pakistani constitution, army is under the civilian rule, and those elected civil leaders can use the army in a manner that seems fit to them.

Pakistan did help out the Jordan by sending the army to eliminate PLO threat during Zia days. Pakistan received 1Bln $'s aid from Saudi king. Also million of Pakistani's are working in GCC countries. @imran khan You are right Imran. The Sheikhs are desperate to try and distract us from fighting are own problems (one of the latest causes of which is the religious orthodoxy surreptitiously being financed by them for purely colonial reasons) back here in Pakistan because they know that our success in our civil war would surely increase what they have to dish out for not only Pakistani but all labor in their countries.

May be this problem should be decided by Pakistan calling that part of the 'Arabian Sea' which is included in Pakistani territorial waters as the 'Sea of Pakistan.'

Pakistan could easily repay all its debts to the KSA by shipping to Yemen all the religious orthodoxy supporters who are willing to go there for whatever reason.

Dear minister! Please try to understand that your offensive will never bring fruitful results for Arabs. Your offense is not the solution but a start of bigger problem, the rise of militias from different Yemeni tribes who will later be fighting for their own piece of land. Yemen will break into pieces. And this situation is not in the interest of any Muslim country but isreal. Remember, Yemen also never accept isreal there's no isreal embassy there. There is democracy in Yemen. Give houthis right to have their representation in Yemeni government according to the formula mutually agree. That's the solution according to me, Mr. Minister!

they are cutting head of pakistani in saudi like cows. and our Gov don't fight for their innocence. now they want us to fight their fight wow. if nawaz did this we will never be respected anywhere in the world. because we sent our boys for money to die.

@Pathapu Although this is a clear cut hype created by Arabs..but even if there is any threat from Iran ...even then..even then we should not get involved in any such conflict. The Arabs already have Israel and USA - the two military giants - on their side and they still feel afraid of Houthis ? Very strange and illogical to say the least !!

@AMJAD KHAN It is in fact the Saudis who call the Houthis as rebels and we - our media - has joined in the chorus without bothering a bit to have a look at the history of either Houthis or Yemen. In fact it is Saudis who got the last Feb elections cancelled in Yemen on lame excuses. Why were the Yemeni people not allowed to select govt of their choice thru vote ? and now if there is any dissent the dissenting ones are labelled as rebels.

Saudi Minister 's statement also indicates that internal matter ( the resolution ) is not binding on them and Pak needs to ready for testing times as far as KSA is concerned. Army is cleaverly silent .
