RAWALPINDI: The execution of one of the five convicts in non-terrorism cases at Adiala jail on Wednesday was suspended on the direction of a court.

On the other hand, two convicts in non-terrorism crimes - Nadeem Zaman and Mohammad Javed - were hanged in the jail early on Tuesday. The bodies were later handed over to their heirs by the prison officials.

The jail authorities received the death warrants of Mohammad Shabir, Shaukat Ali, Talib Hussain, Rab Nawaz and Qadir Ahmed after their mercy petitions were rejected by the president.

Another’s execution stayed after pardon by heirs of murdered boy

However, the execution of Qadir Ahmed, 35, a resident of Chakwal, was deferred on a stay order issued by a magistrate.

He was sentenced to death for killing a four-year-old son of his divorced sister over a petty issue in 2001. A prison official said the boy’s mother had forgiven the convict after which the court issued the order.

The four convicts will be hanged on Wednesday morning. It will be the largest number of convicts executed in the Adiala jail on a single day since the moratorium on executions was lifted by the government a few months ago.

A senior official of the prison department said none of the convicts was involved in terrorism cases.

Mohammad Shabir, a resident of Fatehjang, was arrested by the Airport police in a murder case registered on April 26, 2006.

Talib Hussain and Rub Nawaz of Chakwal were also convicted in a murder case registered in December 25, 1992.

The convicts held last meetings with their family members on Tuesday.
