ISLAMABAD: Customs officials at Benazir Bhutto International Airport on Saturday detained Pakistani supermodel Ayyan for attempting to carry US $500,000 abroad. The amount was hidden in her luggage.

Ayyan, 21, was reportedly booked to travel on a flight to Dubai this morning. Customs officials recovered US $500,000 from her luggage before she could board the plane.

The attempt falls under money laundering as customs regulations do not permit travelling with such a large, undeclared amount.

Customs authorities registered a case of money laundering against her and investigation into the incident has started.

Ayyan will be held at Adiala jail pending investigation and a bail plea.

Model, singer, multi-millionaire?

Super model Ayyan has been one of the most widely recognised faces in Pakistan's modelling industry, although in recent years her career has shifted towards producing music.

Major claim to fame: being Ufone and Magnum’s brand ambassador.
At the Lux Style Awards (LSA) in 2011 she was one of the nominees for Best Model (Female) along with Rabia Butt, Mehreen Syed, Nooray Bhatti and Cybil Chowdhry. She was nominated a number of times in future LSAs as well.
Ayyan also did a campaign for Sunsilk which famously featured her in a hijab.
In 2014 Ayyan tried her hand at singing, releasing a song titled ‘You and I.’ The song wasn’t exactly a hit, and the follow-up album was similarly forgettable.

May the justice prevails, she should get fare investigation on why she was travelling with such a huge amount of money, and gets the maximum punishment. There should also be investigation on the source of this money. As there was similar case against a famous singer Mr Rahat Fateh Ali, which I don't remember any decision or trial on him. These bog shots get away easily by some big boss's phone call or heavy bribes.

This the problem with people when they are flying , then they feign ignotance about rules,you can not carry more than 10000 dollars or equivalent when traveling, remember famous incident of Shah Rukh in NewYork when he cried horse in the name of Khan he was caught travelling with more than 25000 dollars in his luggage

I am not surprised about USD 500,000 rather about the channel she tried to use to transfer the money out of Pakistan. Depriving the national cache of its due share is one of the reasons why a country whose citizens can afford to own and carry USD 500,000 is still burried under a pile of heavy debt. But do in Rome as Romans do. Still, some people of character and integrity are performing their collective national duty, keeping the country on its foot. Pakistan Customs officials could have released her, bribe, graft, whatever you would like to call it but, they did the right job. I hope she will be punished for the crime. But USD 500,000 are quite enough to bail her out and I wonder how many more USD 500,000 she owns? By the way, I have never heard of her, who is she? I am not joking. And yes, I do live on earth and pretty well aware of what happens here everyday.

She may not have right connections to do this or she might be doing this on a bad advice otherwise she could have taken this money out easily. Last but not the least, she might be a victim.

Why are we surprised? The scourge of money laundering and secret foreign accounts is a plague that affects almost all countries, including India and Pakistan. OECD estimates that $39 trillion is the amount that has been illegally stashed away. Otherwise how can you explain the comfortable foreign sojourns of Musharraf, Bhuttos, Sharifs and the rest. A Pakistani friend of mine who lived in Frankfurt tells me how often he had to drive his relatives and friends from Pakistan to deposit money in European banks. And my friend and his relatives are not even from among the super rich.

Really nice to see that law is being enforced evenhandedly...at least at the face of it. In the past such personalities would have been able to sneak through our security that applies rules differently when it comes to VIPs. The amount legitimately earned or illegally, the fact is that no country in the world would let you transfer this kind of amount in cash. Even in banking channel, it might be difficult these days.

All these politicians and bureaucrats when they go abroad - we must be fools not to think they have 'dollars' in their luggage. Recall a few years ago when Karzia's 1/2 brother showed up in Dubai with 70 million in US dollars in about 20 suitcases. Customs looked at the money and let him go. They could not hold him. 500,000 is peanuts!

Nobody was denying her an exit from the country, she was carrying an undeclared amount of foreign currency so big, probably local banks dont have such reserves in cash. And this isnt just pakistan that's making such hue and cry, money laundering worldwide is a crime equivalent of terrorism. All developed countries have the most strictest of laws reserved for such an act. If that was her rightful money, she should've moved it with the proper channels. This was an absolute mockery of all the laws of the land, and credit to the agencies who stopped it in time.
