LAHORE, Sept 23: The Punjab and all its district governments would provide funds for installation of gates on all level crossings to prevent accidents in future.

This was stated by Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi during a meeting with Railway Minister Ghaus Bux Mehr here on Tuesday.

The chief minister emphasized the need for chalking out a comprehensive strategy in league with the railway ministry for preventing accidents at railway crossings. Senior officers of the province and the railway ministry would soon meet to ponder over how to control accidents in future, he said.

He expressed his grief and sorrow over the accident at Malikwal crossing and said the provincial and the federal government were working out an operational strategy in this regard.

Mr Elahi told Mr Mehr that effective measures were being taken to provide amenities to katchi abadis near railway lines, ordering removal of encroachments there.

The railway minister informed the chief minister about steps being taken to control railway accidents.

NWFP GOVERNOR: Meanwhile, NWFP Governor Lt-Gen Syed Iftikhar Husain (retired) also met the chief minister.

During the meeting, Mr Elahi explained education reforms in the province.

He said the province had started implementing the reforms. All data regarding missing facilities in schools had been collected and the government would provide them at a cost of Rs18 billion during the next three years, he said.

The governor said effective measures were being taken to make the administrative machinery responsive in the province.
