Seven dead in road accident near Faisalabad

FAISALABAD: Seven people, including four children, have been confirmed dead after a road accident took place near Faisalabad on Friday.

The incident took place on 441-GB Samundri road, which is a narrow single track. According to eye witnesses that spoke to DawnNews, two buses were racing each other on the narrow road, when one of them went out of control and struck a motorcycle rickshaw— which had 11 people on board— coming from the opposite direction.

The rickshaw driver and a man named Yusuf, who was the father of some of the kids on board the rickshaw, died on the spot, while two children passed away when rescue teams were taking them to Allied Hospital in Faisalabad.

According to latest reports, two children succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, while an injured woman also passed away at the hospital.

Following the road accident, an angry mob burnt down the bus; but the driver and the conductor were able to escape from the scene.

In Pakistan, around 9,000 road accidents are reported to the police every year since 2011, killing more than 4,500 people on average, according to figures from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

In January this year, a fatal accident between a passenger bus and an oil tanker near Karachi had left more than 60 dead.

Heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. Government shall bring stricter control over licensing of drivers, bus operators and clearance of buses. Compulsory monthly inspection of buses and trucks by private sector owned Vehicle Centers to certify brakes, seat belts, engine, chassis, mirrors, body etc. etc. Similarly drivers shall be sent for compulsory reinforcing practical training every 12 months before his/her license is renewed. And women shall be encouraged and preferred to drive school buses and buses within towns. They are by nature compassionate and sober drivers.

First of all really sad incident! For God's sake come to 21st century! Drivers of both buses should be punished and imprisoned and Angry mob should be fined for taking the law in to their hand and buring the bus. The bus was not their property! Common sense Simple rules..

Too many accidents resulting in too many loss of lives. Where is transport ministry? Are ministry people doing their job for improvement of transporation & roadway systems or simply collecting their salary and having good time?

These kind of incidents are what highlights the jahalat of the country. This has nothing to with terrorism, Economy or anything. I bet you the bus was trying to overtake the other bus and both of them maintained the same speed parallel to each other where no one could pass each other. feel really sorry for the father, his kids and above all the mother who probably got this news.

This figure is probably more then killed by terrorist we are pumping millions of dollars into better intelligence and policing but our government is totally oblivious of the this fact of increasing avoidable road accidents.i will suggest to the government to have a system of separating the commercial drivers license from residential licenses setting up a separate department of transportation that will be monitoring the licenses of these people and they must be able to read and pass a physical exam with normal eyes and complete a short course of driver education before people lives could be trusted with these untrained drivers.this license should be renewed every 1-2 yrs provided they continue to have good eye sights and physical exam .Regretfully most of these accidents could be avoided by passing certain laws and monitoring of commercial vehicles and drivers.

@Atiq , bahi besides roads ,real problem is these pagal drivers, shameless jerks start racing and speeding with passengers on board. Specially vans etc. I have myself experienced this speeding experience. Driver ko lagta tha woh kisi film ka hero hai. He was literally taking his head out of window to mock and grimace at and speed ahead of passing by tractors or rickshaws *_*. Some choice words that i wanna use and i am keeping myself from that.

@Che Ben, where in bus driving license has been written that the person would never race his vehicle. Most accidents take place not because of not having knowledge of driving but due to passion of racing.

Hunt the driver down and hang him. Unless some of these drivers are given this sort of punishment, things won't improve

Punjab government is busy in building these overpasses and underpasses and signal free corridors thinking it will solve all the traffic problems but the result is quite opposite. Even if you build 12 lanes, fact is you would still find rikshaw, chingchi or a bike in the right lane i.e the fastest lane. Similarly our bus drivers are as illiterate. The problem isn't the roads but illeteracy of the drivers. I hope Punjab gov realises this but I guess they themselves are too illeterate to see this.
