KOHAT: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has ordered an inquiry against former vice-chancellor of the Kohat University of Science and Technology and his colleagues for committing financial irregularities, Dawn has learnt.

According to a notification, the government has constituted a four-member committee to conduct investigations into the complaints against Nasir Jamal Khattak and some of his colleagues under the amended Universities ACT, 2012.

The committee comprises special secretary, deputy secretary and two section officers of the higher education department. The allegations include corruption in the execution of projects, illegal appointments, and minting money from students by imposing huge fines of up to Rs10,000 on them for absenting classes.

The committee would also investigate the fact that the vice chancellor had appointed his relatives to several posts in the varsity.

The students and senior staff of KUST had been demanding cancellation of VC’s extension and had provided proofs to the former governor, Barrister Syed Masood Kausar, but, the latter, being his close friend refused to initiate inquiry against Mr Khattak, and granted him second stint.

SUSPECTED TERRORISTS ARRESTED: The police arrested a suspected terrorist along with two accomplices while traveling from Orakzai Agency to Kohat on Monday. The man was wanted by Karachi police and security forces in terrorist attacks, said local police officials. They said that the DPO had constituted a team after receiving information that a group of suspected terrorists, who had come from Karachi recently, would travel to Kohat from Orakzai. The team led by inspector Iqbal Momand started checking at old Tableeghi Markaz on Hangu road, and arrested the alleged outlaws from a car number (RH-294). They were identified as ring leader Bilal Khan and his accomplices, Faheem Orakzai and Syaaz Khan, residents of Kalay and Shahu Khel areas of Orakzai Agency.

Police during checking of their papers found that their identity cards had permanent addresses of Korangi, Karachi.

The Kohat police contacted the Karachi police, which confirmed that they were wanted in cases of attacks on police and security forces. They would be handed over to Karachi police after preliminary investigations, said the police officials. — Correspondent
