Struggling Younis denies retirement tweet

BRISBANE: Out of form senior batsman Younis Khan denied on Wednesday tweeting a plan to retire from one-day internationals after the ongoing World Cup, saying he was working hard to come good for his team.
A tweet from a supposedly official Younis account on Tuesday said he was going to retire from white-ball cricket after the World Cup and continue to play Tests.

However, Younis insisted he did not have a Twitter account of his own.

“I have no Twitter account and it's (the story about his retirement) fake, “Younis told AFP on Wednesday. “I am working hard to come good in batting and have not decided anything like that.
“Younis has been a subject of severe criticism from former Pakistan players after scores of six and nought in Pakistan's defeats in their first two matches of the World Cup.
He was asked to open the innings in Pakistan's first match against arch-rivals India in Adelaide, a promotion which backfired.

Since arriving on the New Zealand tour last month, the 37-year-old has managed just 78 runs in eight matches, including four warm-up games and two one-day internationals prior to the World Cup.
Pakistan next play Zimbabwe in a Pool B fixture in Brisbane on March 1, a game they must win to harbour realistic hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals.
Former Pakistan captain turned commentator Ramiz Raja has urged Younis to quit one-day internationals. “I beg of Younis. Thank you for your services to Pakistan cricket but please leave this ODI side now,” Raja told a Pakistan television channel on Tuesday.
“I think Younis should tell the management he should be rested. “Javed Miandad, another former Pakistan captain, lashed out at team management for asking a struggling Younis to open.
“What's the rocket science of promoting Younis Khan as an opener?,” Miandad wrote in his column for the International Cricket Council website.
“If you are not an opener you tend to struggle against the new ball and if you are not in form, it only compounds your problems,” said Miandad, also a former Pakistan coach.
Younis has scored 7,203 runs in 263 one-day internationals and his selection in the 15-man squad only came after he scored a century during the 3-2 one-day series defeat by New Zealand in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year.
Prior to that series, he was dropped from the one-day side which lost to Australia, also in the UAE.
He scored 468 runs, including three hundreds and a best of 213, in the 2-0 win over Australia in the Tests which led the selectors to recall him for the New Zealand series in the UAE.

Well it was the media and Pakistan cricket team fans at large who demanded his inclusion in the one day squad after his performance in UAE tests against Aussies and Black caps.They mocked the decision to leave him out by the selection committee, so why cry now.

The culture of incompetence is very pervasive in Pakistan. No one wants to admit that they are not suitable for the job. All the way from the PM to the Rickshaw driver nobody wants to take responsibility of their shortcomings. Why should this be any different?

I am a die heart Pakistani fan and want to see Pakistan reaching to the next stage of the WC2015 for which chances are now very dim. Despite that I think criticism on Yunus performance in the initial two matches of the WC has been unfair. The reason is Yunus is the great player down the order and surely not for opening position. In the past in most matches with Hafeez and Shazad we were able to get the initial 10 overs or so negotiated with a score of around 45-50. So, when Yunus came, the ball was old and so the pressure was off the Yunus of early wicket down and the run-rate. In the initial two matches of the WC, Yunus has played as opener with new balls and/or wicket down with 1 run on the scoring board.
I think we shall criticize the PCB and the bunch of management for the fallout of Pakistan team in the recent matches than criticizing the players for their performance.
Questions: Why Moin and so many other irrelevant staff are in the WC squad? We did the PCB think not thought of who would be the right person after sending Hafeez back home? Jamshed who was even not the part of the team for ages! Do we need to send Hafeez back? Why the PCB was so over confident with their bowling squad that they did not bother/try to include Ajmal in the WC team.
I would personally think we shall sack all the PCB staff responsible, who worked on their personal vendetta rather than for the team, and shall be less harsh on the players as they are their since PCB wants them to be there!

may be its harsh to ask a legend batsman on the field and off the field. he has not given his wicket by himself in both matches rather most of other batsman have thrown themselves. we have to encourage younis to get in good touch if he gets in the back bone of Pakistan batting will be strengthen. if he could bat 50 overs Pakistan may survive in struggling batting.

@AH Are you saying that Younis cannot adjust his technique for earlier overs, in case openers fail? If so, is he really that great, nowadays? At one time, yes he was in great form. In both the games his greatness would have shown if he had just hung around and let the ball become a bit old. The reality is that with age, reflexes slow down. What he could do earlier, cannot be done now. And he is not a big-hitter to bat too late either. I think his current form is causing some balance problem.

Younis is trying his best to get PCB attention to be dropped. He scored badly in 2 matches, also tried to retire also went to casino for a week but no avail he is still not dropped. What more he can do to convince PCB that he is finished.

More than Yunis himself it is the PCB and its yes man Moin Khan who are at fault in selecting him for the WC which was wrongly based on his performance in Test matches. As confirmed by the batsman he has no intentions to quit ODIs and so now it is upto the PCB and the captain to drop him for the sake of good of the team and also good of the country.

Please appoint SHAHID AFRIDI captain of ODIside for remaining WC2015matches. He can play as an opener. PAK can't win because their most specialist batsman Misbah Ul Haq is not capable to score 100+run in ODI. Same on PCB to remove SHAHID AFRIDI from captaincy.

After establishing several world records only a few weeks back, why should he retire on a few bad outings that is just normal. After all, Gayle had much more mishaps than Younus before his sudden rise to the top.

Khurram, there is no retirement age in cricket. One can play as long as he desire/physically manage. The oldest player to play cricket was Wilfred Rhodes. He was 52 years 165 days when he retired.

He is being challenged not by his cricketing skills but by the crticism. Hope he prevails in that and deliver soon. I guess the only reason for him sticking to the team is to retire with worldcup win. Nothing wrong as the player like him do deserve to retire on High. He has cricket left in him so why should he retire. How many ppl remember remember Aamir Sohail, Saeed Anwar, Zaheer abbas. Majid Khan or Haneef Muhammad. But every one remebers Imran, Inzamam, Javed, even Salim malik because they won world cup. There is a famous saying" When the Going gets tough, the tough gets going". Wait an see. The Lion is about to roar. Only reason for his criticism is Pak loss to India.

I strongly believe that he can contribute to Pakistan ODI team, he needs to used appropriately, Misbah must swap his number with Younis, Misbah being in form will be more success at 3 and Younis can bat at No. 5, 6 or 7 when the ball is old and he can show his class there, while Afridi needs to bat at top as opener which if worked for few overs like Brendan Mccallum it will lift Pakistan run rate in first ten overs... I am very sure this will work to our benefit as team...

@Atif What you've also confirmed then is all Pak batsmen of this era are simply flat track bullies and nothing more..who was the last player to score an odi century in England, aus or south Africa? Most likely more than five years ago. If there is nobody better than him, why is everyone after his head? An odi game is 50 overs long, not one of these batsmen can last the full length, not even half. You don't need to churn figures to reach this conclusion. Please don't come back with names that have previously struggled with average bowlers in Dubai.

@omar well, he might be a good batsman of tests but not odis. Yes we don't have any great in our line up rt now but does that mean we keep playing him. To include him in team, fawad alam was dropped who has an avg of 40 plus. If younis khan is so great, he should not have had such consistent poor run.
Kallis, in my reckoning is still ten times better than younis. Still he quit when he realized that he was being a hurdle for fresh talent n not performing.
Yes, younis khan, if played in matches against uae, zimbabwe n ireland. But that too is a may be.

Mr Ramiz Raja, if you don't approve of a certain player to be part of the team then you can talk to him directly or go complain to the PCB or the coach. Lamblasting one of our finest batsman onlive tv isn't something a sober person would do.

Whether he retires or not he should not be selected in any future matches. If the team management selcets him they will be doing it at the cost of entire PCB borad of governors and officials being fired.
Pakistan should try the youngsters as after the Ireland win they have no chance to qualify for qtr, finals.

Pakistan need to win the remaining four games. The only way they will do that is if they can counter attack the middle overs with someone who can rotate the strike. Although Younis is out of form he is still by far one of the most experienced players in the side. Everyone goes through a lean Patch for example Chris Gayle did until he hit 200 runs. The only way Younis will come out of his lean patch is if he is given a chance in the middle of the order after Misbah. I would rather have him than Haris Sohail.
