PESHAWAR: Teachers plan to launch a protest campaign across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from next month over the provincial government’s failure to accept their demands of timescale promotion, allowing elections of the teachers’ unions and implementing son quota in jobs.

This was announced by All Teachers Coordination Council (ATCC), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chairman Faiq Zada Kakakhel while speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Wednesday.

He said that the teachers’ council had presented a charter of demands to the provincial government but the authorities concerned had failed to take any steps for its implementation, causing unrest among teachers.

He said that giving timescale promotion to teachers of all cadres as per seniority and experience topped the demands. Another demanded was holding of elections to the teachers unions.

Flanked by ATCC general secretary Muzamil Khan Tarabi and other office-bearers, Mr Kakakhel urged the provincial government to revive the son job quota and induct in grade 15 the children of teachers, especially those died during service.

He said that the teachers had also been deprived of allowances and other incentives for long, which must be given to them. 

He also sought the scrutiny of funds being spent by the Frontier Education Foundation.

Similarly, he said teachers of all cadres should be appointed at higher positions in all the secondary education boards and directorate of education, Fata.

“We want to resolve the issues of teachers’ community through dialogue, but the government is not paying heed towards our demands,” said Mr Kakakhel. He, however, said the ATCC had also devised a protest plan according to which rallies would be held in Nowshera on March 3 and 5, while a procession was planned on March 7 in Charsadda. In Swabi, he added, teachers would organise a protest rally on March 9.

Similarly, Mr Kakakhel said that a procession would be held in Kohat on March 11 and in Lakki Marwat on March 12, while rallies would be organised in Abbottabad on March 16, Upper Dir on March 18 and in Swat on March 19, respectively.

A grand sit-in would be held in Peshawar on March 25, said the teachers’ leader.
