Top PCB officials missing in action as key decisions begin to backfire

LAHORE: None of the leading Pakistan Cricket Board officials were available in the PCB headquarters at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Monday, a day after Pakistan team’s shock defeat to arch-rivals India at Adelaide in a crucial World Cup match on Sunday.

Neither chairman Shaharyar M. Khan nor PCB Governing Board member and chairman of three committees Najam Sethi or Shakil Sheikh (head of Cricket Committee) — who had played key roles in taking major cricket related decisions prior to the start of the World Cup — were available in the PCB offices which was extremely surprising and reflective of their mindset about the team’s performance in Australia.

The need of the hour was that the trio should have met immediately to discuss the shambolic display by national team at Adelaide after India, who were under tremendous pressure before the crunch game due to their dismal show in the recent Test series and the tri-nation ODI series in Australia, cruised to a 76-run win over Pakistan for the sixth consecutive time in a World Cup.

Keeping in view Ireland’s strong performance against the West Indies on Monday and Zimbabwe’s heroic fightback against the formidable South Africans in Sunday’s other match, it is a fact that the chances of Pakistan qualifying for the last-eight stage of the World Cup have been dampened even further.

Only captain Misbah-ul-Haq fought hard with his rock solid batting while opener Ahmed Shehzad chipped in with 46 against India as the rest of the players failed to resist the pedestrian bowling attack of the opposition. Seasoned players like Younis Khan, Shahid Afrid and talented youngsters like Umar Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood and others all failed making an impact in the crucial game as Pakistan badly faltered in the run chase after conceding a mammoth score of 300 earlier in the match.

It is, indeed a sorry state of affairs that despite Misbah’s resolute batting and captaincy during the last many months, a smear campaign against him has been run by certain people in the team management including head coach Waqar Younis and chief selector Moin Khan who for long have favoured Afridi to replace the gutsy 40-year-old skipper.

Sources confirmed that both Moin and Waqar had advised PCB chief Shaharyar during the last series against Australia held in the UAE to remove Misbah as the ODI skipper and put Afrid in the saddle. The chairman, however, turned it down.

It has also been learnt that the PCB’s ridiculous move to send chief selector Moin Khan with the World Cup squad is also being detested by the players and they were not comfortable with it.

While no immediate change could be made in the team at this stage, the PCB at least could call back Moin to let captain Misbah and the players breathe easy and field a sensible playing eleven to salvage some pride in the tournament.

why 'shock' defeat? it is a game loosing and winning is part of it. Why predetermined mind set that the outcome must be win and nothing less. This takes the sheen out of the cricket. Introspection is one thing and demoralizing players by adding such adjectives is different and need to be avoided.

This is indeed a sorry state of the affairs and unfortunately, this is how PCB has been run for decades. On top of all this, Moin is micromanaging the team, which is pathetic. The sad things is that people like Moin and Waqar who played under Imran Khan for years have learned nothing from his style of leadership. It is also not surprising that no one was available to answer media's question because they can't explain their idiosyncrasies.

These officials give a damm about country and more interested in their personnel interest, and to divert attention they keep on calling other people as traitors and distributing patriotism certificate is their favorite past time.

Yes Pak better qualify and don't let an associate team taking the place. It is now matter of pride to get to the quarter finals. Still bowling is our strength and should be used wisely by Captain/Coaches. Yasir Shah's inclusion against India backfired. We couldn't take wickets or control runs during middle of Indian innings. Yasir needs to turn the ball. Only liking by Shane Warne should not give him permanent place in the team. Fourth bowler always needed but should be selected based on opponent's weakness and pitch condition. Shahid Afridi should be in the team as fifth bowler.

don't know how Moin Khan can add value to the team. He is just getting free trips etc...what a waste of resources. I bet he is interfering in the issues, we should have sent shoaib malik as he recently played in Australia, he offers a spin option and plus he is a good fielder - there is just not enough fire power to chase 300 plus scores by Pakistan.

Its all mess over there and I don't know who advised to send out of from Younis from a position of # 3 to open the innings and why Sarfaraz the wicket keeper kept out from the team and thus putting Umer Akmal under tremendous pressure to perform WK & Batsman duty !!..Better we call back Waqar , Moin & Mushtaq back on hot shot vehicle and let the captain & players to play their normal cricket.

I do not understand writer's comment "Misbah’s resolute batting and captaincy". Misbah played another useless innings which proved that his batting was not result-oriented but just to confirm that he stands there when nobody else plays. If you want to see my point, just imagine how AB Deviliers, Hashim Amla, Chris Gayle, Kevin Peterson, or even Kohli/Dhawan would have batted in a similar situation.

People like Sethi yaps a lot on his TV program Mere Mutabiq. But when it comes to facing the public and/or the media, they go into hiding. It's about time the PM takes personal interest into the game of cricket and get rid of people like Sethi, Shahyar Khan and other such opportunists. One also wonders why Moin Khan is accompaning the team. He is NOT required there.

This is typical of Indian & Pakistani media. Making a mountain out of a molehill. Though I am Indian, Pakistan has lost just one match. What on earth can the committee do ? Play for Pakistan ? The team has lost A MATCH. So what if it was to India ? Let us have some proportion ; does anybody seriously expect India or Pakistan or Sri Lanka or any team other than Australia / New Zealand to win this world cup ? It would be a great upset if it happened. To qualify for the quarters you need to beat West Indies (very doable), Zimbabwe (doable), UAE (are you kidding me ?) and that's it. You get into the quarter , after which it is A GAME to reach the semis and A GAME to reach the final. We may all be surprised by the SF lineup or may not. But to write off a team after one loss is seriously annoying.

Moin as chief selector is where the action is - he won't be moving until Pakistan campaign ends. Him and Waqar were always in Afridi's corner and Boom boom has all the support he needs to 'delay' his retirement plans after the WC, especially if Pakistan make an early exit. The manager can at least keep Moin out of the dressing room if the players resent his involvement. PCB missing in action when going gets tough is to be expected. They are all praying for Pakistan to turn it around before they show their faces again. Sethi who loves the limelight is going to keep a low profile this week. Poor Misbah who doesn't have Lala's fortune to continue failing with the bat 9/10 and still be the nation's and management's hero is truly amazing.

It is not only about team selection but also about strategy..I don't know what the coaches teach these players as majority of the Pak batsmen either stop or bang..you can't chase 301 by playing 169 dot balls and scoring 301 in rest of 131 deliveries. You ought to snatch singles and keep the score board moving but it needs common sense and common sense is a free package if you have brains in your heads right below the hair where head & shoulders is used.

SHAHID AFRIDI should captain for rest WC's matches because he's aggressive nature, right decision quality & guts. Misbah is useless person who mostly tends to defeat. So replace him by Afridi. SARFRAZ AHMAD & AFRIDI are better opener than Sehzad, Jamshed & Yonus Khan. May I remind you that SHAHID AFRIDI was an opener with SAEED ANWAR & AAMIR SOHAIL.

These are facts that have been known to one and all. Moin and Waqar are running the show and Misbah is being held hostage by these guys. Since Moin has been made manager and doing the same role as a selector he has negatively effected the morale of the team. Only a resolute captain Misbah can perform solitary in this environment. Cricket is a game and one team has to win but the way this team has been embracing defeat without any fighting spirit is shameful. Of course Misbah made mistakes in this match but no one else except Wahab Riaz and Suhail decided to show up. We had won many matches with Hafeez and Ajmal now both have been shown the door with an ounce of dignity or respect.

Hopeless selection is to blame for Pakistan's loss. PCB and selectors are responsible for the selection. Hence they should be held responsible for this. PCB needs to disclose on what basis each of the member of Pakistani squad was selected. This needs to be made public or else we will not be able to drive the corruption out.

@Farhan The pedstrian bowling bowled out Australia in 48 overs and Pakistan in 45 overs! Pakistan ,s great bowlers got out only 2 batsmen until the time wild hitting for 6s started! Even then the great bowlers got only 7 in the allotted 50 overs!

We as a nation do not have a habit of recognising impending defeat and accepting defeat when it has come on to us. We are too busy praying to God for miracles when we should be working hard and asking God to make us work harder. This mindset starts from school when children do not study the whole year and then at the last moment we start to pray in weird and wonderful ways and also expect miracles for no hardwork what so ever. The dumbness of our mindset travels with us as we grow in all walks of life. Miracles are chance events, if they happened all the time they would not be miracles. Reward from Hardwork on the other hand is most likely to be a frequent event and not based on chance alone.

The only solution is to ask and make sure the (a) players play to their potential, (b) a proper wicketkeeper and a proper order of batsmen and (c) we are not expecting the skipper to just score runs, he has to "captain" - use right bowler at right time and set field according to the kind of shots a batsman usually plays. We failed in all departments and India did very well. Congratulations to India and a lesson for PCB.

I don't agree that replacing Misbah with Afridi as ODI captain would be a bad ploy. Misbah has been really great with the team and his services to Pakistan cricket are outstanding. However, his team selection and planning lacks juice. The decision to continually accommodate Younis Khan, even with an opener's position is clearly a surprising one. Sarfraz should've been played down the order at 7. We've just given him one game and that too as an opener and considered him a failure. Harris Sohail went in at 3, and almost faced the new ball. He should be promoted to open, his batting looks much more solid than Younis's anyway.

Misbha is unnecessarily being projected as the victimized Hero , when in fact he is the main villain for the debacle. Misbha scored 76 runs out of 84 balls .Out of 76 runs he scored 42 runs in 10 balls . which means he consumed 74 balls for a pedantry 34 runs . It is evident that his inability score single and rotate strike ,brings pressure on the other batsmen , especially when it happens to be the captain , who forces this situation on the players . Misbha's approach has been same in most of the India - Pak ties .People who have superficial knowledge on cricket ,eulogize Misbha for his effort , with out realising that he is the main culprit for the defeat .

Interesting article, I liked the word "shambolic" (alluding to shame, sham, shaman and bolic for emphasizing the sham) but in addition to defining the team's kartoot, it also could have been used to describe the state of cricket affairs in general. This is not only about defeat but about the way whole unit outclassed by India. Indian board is a professional board who knows where to use resources unless like Pakistan where chairman of the board replace 6 times in a year, political interference, corruption, lack of professionalism cause Pakistan defeat because mentally they are not relax , when they landed in Australia behind the scene their central contracts where in question how on earth you can do that ? India deserve that win they played as a unit , they had backing from a very professional board , managers . PCB needs to be clean from any political interference, we have such a talent fast bowlers but absolutely no grooming. All blames goes towards the team mangers, selection committee, chairman board decision makers not the player as they already in immense pressure .

What a panicky article! First of all, it wasn't a "shock" defeat. Pakistan hasn't had time to acclimate and India are a tough, professional side who show up for big occasions like the World Cup. Secondly, WI is terrible and them losing to Ireland isn't that much of a surprise. And thirdly, Pakistan will qualify for the next stage even if they lose to SA. I don't think the rest of the teams in Pool B will pose much of a challenge and Pakistan can only get better as the tournament progresses. So chill.

India does have a good batting lineup but their bowling is mediocre at best. When bowlers like Shami start to take four wickets on a bating track, it makes one wonder how bad Pakistan batted. Indian bowlers were taken to cleaners by AUS, ENG recently and NZ last year.

Let us check with Nawaz Sharif if he can set up a committee to investigate this "shocking defeat". He is really good at setting up committees,making sure Najam Sethi is chairman of investigating committee, bet he would come up with a story such as he consulted Imran Khan before sending team to world championship.

This is what we have been saying all along. Javed Miandad warned them about the opening bat problem and said this will backfire and it happened. Now all of a sudden, Gavaskar, Gunguly, Rameez, Wasim Akram and Sarfaraz Nawaz are saying the same. PCB is the only board where the chairman interferes with day to day matters and selection issues. PCB needs to send back Moin Khan and Waqar Younus and make Mushtaq Ahmad as the head coach. He will bring luck to Pakistan.

We might have gone through "shocking defeat" but look at glorious PCB office building, is n't it magnificent ? Wonder where is PHF (Field Hockey) is located ? Probably on the upper floor of some insurance company's office.

@Manjeet kocchar Indians pls keep out of this. This is our internal affair. You have already got the first laugh so be gracious enough to back off. If indeed the news as propagated by the author is true, then the likes of Moin Khan should absolutely be sent back. A sensible manager should replace him and Waqar should be given a pretty stern warning to give his best to the team keeping in mind that Misbah will be the captain throughout the world cup. Having said that its hard to digest why Moin and Waqar would want Misbah out especially since he is retiring after this mega event.

Well! If you really believe that it was a "pedestrian bowling attack" then there are more surprises waiting. The fielding of the Indian team, and catching were superb. If Pakistan's performance looked bad the credit goes to the Indian team's superior performance. This is where Pakistan should look at to perform better.

@Manjeet kocchar I agree. It was never a shock defeat. Indian team as of now is better -- batting , bowling and confidence. The big factor in Pakistan team is that players selection is political , not based on merit and the captain is not strong , like dhoni.

The manner of the defeat to India is the reason why Pakistanis are complaining. If it was a close game which could have gone either way, yes it would have been a bitter pill to swallow to lose in such a situation, but at-least it shows the team and PCB are functioning properly. The problem we have now is the PCB is corrupt, the players mis-behave, yet they are not held accountable. It's the fans who suffer.

they are politicians not cricketers. Akhtar once got dropped for not practising against one of the selectors son's....akhtar refused because he didnt want to hurt the young lad. These are the kind of people we are dealing with. The attitude of these selectors is that its just a game to silver line our pockets "who cares if we win as long as we get rich". As long as this attitude remains pakistan cricket is doomed.

An incompetent board run by senile governing body. The section committee has no business to go on tour when the team manager and coach are there. Politics all around. Getting Pakistan to the QF appears remote. Moin Khan should be sent a recall notice to end his paid vacation.

Losing to India is no shock defeat. India was always the better team ever since Pakistan lost Ajmal, Hafeez and Junaid. And then it was more of a confirmation when we lost the toss. Apart from all this, Moin Khan wrote the script for Pakistan's down fall and losing out in the first round. No one would ever be able to justify selection of Ehsan Adil, Nasir Jamshed and Yasir Shah. Leaving Fawad Alam and Shoaib Malik out was a blunder of Pakistan's cricket history, speciallywhen we needed a fifth bowler.

The defeat at the the hands of the Indians might have come as a shock to the Pakistanis but it was not a shock at all. Ask any cricketing pundit or any neutral guy and he would have said India will win.The writing was on the wall. Besides other cricketing reasons, tremendous pressure was put on them by their own compatriots as if a hot war had broken out and it was a life and death situation. Most of the players, playing in their first world cup wilted under it.

@Manjeet kocchar Its how you loose that matter. If you put up a fight and loose then no one will blame you. But if you simply never put any effort in batting/bowling and fielding and then expect to win thats share luck. Our team just did not show any effort to win the match.
