Kashmiris observe ‘black day’

MUZAFFARABAD: Hundreds of people took to the streets across Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Monday to condemn India for denying the right to self-determination to the Kashmiris.
The demonstrations coincided with the Republic Day celebrations in India, which Kashmiris observe as ‘black day’, questioning India’s locus standi to declare itself a democratic country when it refuses the same right to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
One of the largest rallies was organised by Hizbul Mujahideen under the leadership of Imtiaz Alam, Uzair Ahmed Ghazali and Asghar Rasool.
“India’s so called Republic Day is a black day for the Kashmiris,” read a big banner carried by the HM activists.
They were raising anti-India and pro-freedom slogans. Some also chanted slogans against what they said an “unholy alliance between India and the United States” in the wake of President Barack Obama’s ongoing tour to India.
The Cultural Academy held at the press club a photo exhibition depicting Indian atrocities in India-held Kashmir.
In the Bhimber district, Jamaat-i-Islami organised ‘Azm-i-Inqilab Conference’ where JI Pakistan chief Maulana Sirajul Haq was the chief guest.

i really don't see any reason for India to fight for this barren piece of land. It has no contributions to Indians and India but big drain on our resources which can be used to uplift and help millions in India. These people dont want to be in the union, then let them be. We, Indians have made this an ego issue nothing else, Rationally we dont gain anything out of this. Stupid people celebrating black day on Indian Republic Day.

i think india should allow people whoever wants to go to pakistan side kashmir permanently. and then this matter will be resolved for forever

Everything not related to Islam is unholy for them... Well!!!! these kashmiris face the reality in Indian colleges, when they expect other Muslims to shout anti India slogans and are bashed by muslims for their anti India stands... Well!!! I am proud of Indian Muslims who are most patriotic and most nationalistic and in fact most rationalist muslim society in the world

I am from Kashmir and forefathers are living there from 1000s of years. I want my kashmir to be part of India. Why you want separate country based on religion?

@DV ground reality is you want kashmir which was a hindu state earlier. Now kicked out all hindu pandits or forcefully converted them to make it majority muslim state.
is this ground reality you are talking about? I will ask you one question "which country are you from" and what is your DNA? If it is not from Indian sub-continent will you go to your original country along with your brother and sisters who are not orginal inhabitants of kashmir?
I know dawn does not have guts to publish my comment. Truth is always bitter my moderator friend. You accept it or not, it is the truth always which prevails.
Kashimiri migrants from other countries should learn to leave in peace or move to their country. Let them get their DNA tested first.

more than 60-80% did cast their votes in recent elections. That is approval of democracy. What else is needed. Determining who will be their leader is self determiniation.

Valley belongs to India from the day when Pakistan send tribal people to kill innocent Kashmiris
It would be wise if we ask them for electricity rather then Kashmir.
In the process of doing good for Kashmiri brother, we have done worst for us
Kashmiris doesn't fear a drone or blackouts or petrol shortage
Kashmiri is a full autonomous state within union of India. We should accept it and try to make friendly relations with India since it is in our best interests

@Arnav you need to realize this news is about Pakistan occupied Kashmir not J&K in India. Secondly Kashmiris do not want to go with Pakistan for sure. In that case should you give them independence and let Pakistan occupy it. The people of Kashmir will suffer like Bangladesh. Also these are organized by militant group not Kashmir. Do you know in Pakistan 7f you want to run for election in Kashmir you have to sign a declaration that you agree Kashmir to be part of Pakistan.
