SWABI: Members of the district security measurement committee will visit the University of Swabi tomorrow (Monday) to examine security measures before deciding on the reopening of the campus.

The university was closed soon for security reasons triggered by the massacre of the Army Public School Peshawar students by terrorism last month.

The district administration later didn’t allow it to resume classes over poor security checks on the campus. The university needs a no objection certificate from the committee for its reopening.

Security officer of the university Zeeshan Khan told Dawn on Saturday that the management had been doing its best to ensure security of the premises.

“We are taking the required security measures and efforts are underway to satisfy them,” he said. Zeeshan said the committee would decide after the visit about whether the university should be allowed to resume classes.

“If we get NOC, then the university will reopen soon thereafter,” he said.

On Wednesday, Mardan DIG Saeed Khan Wazir and commissioner Khalid Hussain visited UoS and discussed the campus security with Vice Chancellor Dr Noor Jehan.

Members of the university’s academic staff said they were in constant contact with the management but there was no official word on the reopening of the university.

They insisted there were a likelihood of the resumption of classes on February 2.

When contacted, Chota Lahor DSP Izhar Shah, a member of the security measurement committee, said the decision on the university’s reopening had yet to be decided by his panel.

The Swabi campus of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University has also been closed for more than 40 days.

The district security measurement committee will decide about its reopening after examining its security measures.

The committee had asked the management to beef up security of the premises. Students of the two varsities complained the prolonged closure of their campus had stressed them out due to the unfinished course. They said they could struggle to prepare for examinations and therefore, the campuses should be reopened without delay.
