FAISALABAD: Four workers were killed and as many others injured when the boiler of a factory exploded in Akbarabad on Jail Road on Saturday.

Rescue 1122 officials shifted the injured to Allied Hospital where the condition of one of them was pronounced critical.

The explosion collapsed the roof of the factory building and labourers were buried under the rubble. Local residents rushed to the factory after hearing the explosion.

The deceased were identified as: Tahir Arif, 20, of Islam Nagar; Majeed, 35, of Kasur; and Shaikh Asif, 28, of Kamalia. The identity of the fourth, believed to be in 40s, could not be ascertained, Rescue officials said.

Mohammad Waheed, 28, and Kashif, 22, of Islam Nagar, sustained injuries and were being treated at the Allied Hospital.

District Coordination Officer Noorul Ameen Mengal told Dawn that a case had been registered against the factory owner and that the factory had also bee sealed. He said a probe into the issue had also been initiated to ascertain the cause of the incident.

He said three injured people had been discharged after initial treatment while the condition of one was critical.
