NEW DELHI: A passenger bus has veered off a road in southeastern India and fallen into a gorge, killing at least 11 people.

Police Superintendent S.V. Rajasekhar Babu says at least nine college students were among those killed in the accident, which took place Wednesday near the town of Penukonda in Andhra Pradesh state.

Press Trust of India says at least 25 other people were injured, some of them seriously.

Babu says the bus was carrying around 50 people when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which then plunged into the gorge.

Penukonda is a small town located about 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) south of New Delhi.

No other details were immediately available.

India has the world's deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
