ISLAMABAD, Sept 12: President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Friday warned extremist groups to stop their activities, saying there was no place for this menace in Pakistan.

The president conveyed the warning to extremists during his meeting with Interior Minister Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat at the GHQ, an official source said.

Gen Musharraf emphasized the need for making the country a liberal, moderate and democratic state, the sources said.

The interior minister had called on the president to apprise him about the law and order situation in the area where borders of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan meet.

Mr Hayat had also held a meeting at Karachi on Thursday to review the situation following an operation that had been carried out in the area by the law enforcement agencies to protect gas pipelines and maintain law and order.

The president directed the minister to take effective measures to maintain law and order situation all over the country. They also discussed matters relating to internal and external security of the country.

The source quoted the president as having expressed concern over the violations of Pakistan-Afghanistan border and told him to control the problem on a war footing.

The minister briefed the president about the efforts made for combating terrorism, lawlessness and border violations.
