LAHORE, Sept 9: Robbers shot dead a motorcyclist on resistance in Sultan Park area of Gulberg on Tuesday night.

Munawar Ali told police that three gunmen stormed into his furniture showroom and took away Rs 12,000 and a gold ring.

The shopkeeper said he, together with neighbours, chased the robbers who had escaped by foot. The miscreants, however, intercepted a motorcyclist, identified as Muhammad Asghar (30), a resident of Cantonment. They attempted to snatch the motorcycle and opened fire when he put up resistance. Asghar sustained a bullet injury and died on way to a nearby hospital.

Model Town division police SP Capt Ahmad Mubin (retd), however, said that the robbers had not tried to snatch the motorcycle. “Instead, they opened the fire in a bid to disperse the chasing shopkeepers and a stray bullet hit the deceased.” The SP said raids were being conducted for the arrest of the robbers.

A police spokesman said city police chief Khwaja Khalid Farooq had directed the police to follow the “clues” found on the scene of the crime to arrest the culprits. He also directed the police investigation wing to draw sketches of the accused on the basis of eye-witnesses accounts to match them with hardened criminals in police record.

Meanwhile, two more gunmen held Zafar Butt in Block D of Faisal Town and drove away with his car (LRJ-766).

Another car and three motorcycles were stolen from other parts of the city.

MURDER: A man was gunned down and another injured over a property dispute at Baowala village in North Cantonment on Tuesday.

Sources say that an MPA from the ruling party was backing one of the groups in the dispute but the police claimed they had no such report.

One of the groups headed by Haji Noor Ahmad and the other by Ghulam Mustafa clashed in the village. A crossfire ensued, resulting in injuries to Noor, Mustafa and another man.

The injured men were rushed to the Lahore General Hospital. Noor died after first aid dressing while the other two men were stated to be in critical condition.

The body was sent to the city mortuary for autopsy. No case has so far been registered.
