WASHINGTON, Sept 9: Democrats in the US Senate introduced legislation on Tuesday that would give the White House just 60 days to submit a detailed report to Congress on Iraq.

The legislation follows a request by President George Bush on Sunday for an additional 87 billion dollars to fund military efforts and reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“After months of dodging questions, giving half-answers, and ignoring congressional requests, the time has come for this administration to level with the Congress and the American people about Iraq,” said Dianne Feinstein, one of nine Democrat senators to sponsor the bill.

Mr Bush’s Republican party hold a majority in the Senate but some could vote with the Democrats.

“President Bush declared an end to major combat operations in Iraq on May 1, 2003, yet as of early September, conditions in parts of Iraq continue to be unstable, long-term costs related to the conflict and reconstruction remain uncertain, and there are no detailed plans on a myriad of issues facing Iraq,” Dianne Feinstein said.—AFP
