India's sterilisation deaths

Tablets linked to the deaths of more than a dozen women who visited a sterilisation camp in India are likely to have contained a chemical compound commonly used in rat poison, two senior officials in Chhattisgarh state said on Saturday.
Preliminary tests of the antibiotic ciprocin tablets were found to contain zinc phosphide, Siddhartha Pardeshi, the chief administrator for the Bilaspur district, told Reuters.
The antibiotics were handed out at the mass sterilisation held a week ago in the impoverished state. At least 15 women have died, most of whom had attended the camp. — Reuters

Indian government gives the *option* of free sterilization procedures. It also gives the option of non-invasive methods such as pills, IUDs and Norplant.

15 deaths so far must be very insignificant for India. After all they went for sterilization. In the last 3 decades there is about 12 million female infanticides in India, means 12 million girls killed. Do some Google search.

i remember a few years back in pakistan drugs made by afroze chemicals wiped out few hundred patients in punjab, this seems to be a similar incident , anything happend to afroze chemicals and its directors after that ?

China tried Russian equipment and failed to reach Mars NOT India (I wish India could afford expensive equipment from Europe, US and Russia), India could not afford expensive foreign equipment they are all indigenous . You must be in primary school but still expect some basic GK.

Although this sort of negligence is indefensible but negligence does occur occasionally even in a rich and advanced country as the US. Remind yourselves, Pakistanis, of the recent death of a celebrated comedienne, Joan Rivers, in a New York clinic after a very routine procedure.

Such gross negligence should not be tolerated.. I am however afraid that Indians will lose faith in contraception, due to such occurrences.. We have to aggressively raise awareness on Small Families (2 children max).. We have to reduce the total national fertility from 2.4 to 1.5 in 10 years time.. & for that these most backward states (Bihar/MP/CG/JH/Raj/UP) are crucial..

I am appalled by the hateful comments under this tragic news. A tragic incident which can happen anywhere regardless of country or nation but playing politics over such news is a shameful act. Sterilisation is a effective birth-control method optimal for under-developed countries and communities with low or no education and it was very good initiative by Indian Govt.
The only thing which scares me that this incident will spread panic among masses and this campaign will be affected badly. We are grown up and should act like that.

I fail to understand, what was rat poison doing in the antibiotic manufacturing process.
Life is so cheap. These people will end up as statistic with the passage of time.

Indian government hospitals in the cities, and state government clinics are in worst shape, dogs either roaming in the wards or sleeping under the patients beds, lavatories over flowing, with foul smell. Pharmaceutical companies, with worst quality drugs are supplied in these hospitals, whose owners have political connections.

Over 100 patients sterilized using same tools with only spirit to sterilize the tools. I believe even Somali medics have some better surgical ethics. Lives have been lost and some Indian citizens are trying to defend this horror. it's not an indo-pak cricket match. Just get over it Mars mission ! what a joke when half the population lacks clean water and basic sanitation and eases in the open.....

As a surgeon I pointed as a comment on first day of this unfortunate event in one of the paper ' surgery alone is unlikely cause of this unfortunate event whole team is culpable ' . Safety is every ones responsibility . In western countries like in USA , Joint Commission , state and federal health departments sets the standards , follows the events corrects them , end less on going process . In India or Pakistan do not have have such organizations with power o over see all health related issues and activities , arresting the culprits will not salve the problem , with out adequate supervision of health professionals .

I wonder how people start commenting without any reading or knowledge. Deaths were due to an adulterated antibiotic ciplofloxacine.. no relation to surgical procedure at all. This medicine is given for non surgical work also throughout the world. But here the medicine batch was contaminated. No faults of doctor or surgical procedure.. life never comes cheap and the culprits who passed this batch need to be punished.
