LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday welcomed the decision of Maryam Nawaz of resigning from the chairpersonship of the Prime Minister Youth Loan Programme, terming it a step towards strengthening of democracy.
Hearing a petition against the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as chairperson of the youth loan programme, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah had on November 11 asked the federal government to remove/replace the chairperson by Friday or the court would pass an appropriate order to this effect. Maryam quit the post ‘voluntarily’ the next day.
A deputy attorney general appeared before the court on Friday and presented a copy of the resignation of Maryam Nawaz.
The law officer stated that the resignation of the chairperson would not affect the functioning of the loan programme.
Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah observed that the appointment should have been made through due process of law.
The judge also directed the government to strictly observe law and transparency to appoint, if required, new head of the loan programme as billions of rupees of the taxpayers were involved in the scheme.
With these directions, the judge disposed of the petition filed by Zubair Niazi, a local leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.
The petitioner had taken a plea that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had misused his prerogative by appointing his own daughter head of the loan scheme.
He said the authority did not follow any law or rules set by the Supreme Court to make the impugned appointment.
Meanwhile, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah dismissed a petition seeking an action against the prime minister for mentioning the name of his daughter as Maryam Nawaz in the notification of the chairperson’s appointment instead of her real name “Maryam Safdar”.
The petitioner, Iqtidar Shah, alleged that the prime minister had defrauded the nation by mentioning ‘wrong’ name of his daughter in the notification.

With a so-called PhD in political science she should have had the wisdom to know that that she was in that position on the basis of nepotism. Only a transparent process of selection could determine her merit. If she did it on pure merit then her father's political position would have become irrelevant.
She is a bad role model for the youth of Pakistan because she did not demand a transparent process to be implemented. The nation expects the youth whose representative she claims to be to be emotionally and politically independent.
She resigned only because she found herself in blind alleyway.

If the LHC has indeed welcomed the resignation of MN then it is a sad reflection on their independence.
Courts should not give "shabashi" (pat on the back) to offenders, for their orders to be carried out. A court's order should be carried out because the law of the land DEMANDS it.
Nobody should be above the law.

Instead if welcoming the resignation, steps should have been initiated against the appointing authority and the appointee for misusing authority and appointing unqualified person, the appointee should also have been charged for accepting a such a position. Such cases should be made example for others and not to be disposed off just by welcoming the resignation.

What is there to be praised ! She got the job not on merit or her so-called qualifications, but, sheer favoritism. I am surprised to see 'Kings' favorite continue to get such preferences with impunity at the cost of merit.

The judge is happy for he gave time to Maryam and she did what was mutually agreed, as government was hesitant to get resignation from her under mounting public pressure! So this strategy was designed! Well done! This judge's supreme court of administrative order brutally crushed lives of sindh's government servants

When did she work on her PhD no one knows. What we know is that she was admitted to Army Medical college in 1991 when Her dad was PM. She was migrated to King Edward medical college Lahore next year. Professor of Physiology and subsequently Professor of Anatomy had to resign as they refused to "pass" her exams. She did not pursue her MBBS any further. And suddenly she got PhD!!! Only in Pakistan these miracles can happen.

What a misleading headline. I don't see judge hailing the decesion. All I see is that judge issuing this statement :

I am a bit disappointed on the action of honorable court. Resignation must not be accepted since it was tendered at last the moment for face saving. Possibally, PML-N would try to get political milage in future. She should be dismissed from post with heavy fine and life ban on any public position in future.

Instead of praising her decision the court now should proceed to the next logical step: Punishment for her along with her father to teach a lesson to future nepotists. For one and half year she kept this post and God know how much corruption she indulged in and perks she enjoyed along with fooling the masses to think that as if the money for loan is coming from her father's pocket where the truth is other way around; money is flowing from National Exchequer to Nawaz family members.
