Movie review: Son of Batman

Like Father, Like Son!

BILLIONAIRE Bruce Wayne may have a secret identity (he is Batman) but not even he knows that his nemesis and former lover — Ra’s al Ghul and his daughter Talia respectively — have been hiding a secret from him and that secret is his son, Damian. In Son of Batman, that secret is revealed after Ra’s al Ghul is assassinated by former protégé Deathstroke, because that’s when Talia reunites Damian with his father and things don’t turn out as expected.

Unlike Batman, Damian had a busy childhood. He was raised by his maternal grandfather to be the future commander of The League of Assassins and is a ticking time bomb, always ready to kill. Batman not only has to fight the bad guys but to check on the young man and what better way to do so than to make him his deputy — Robin — much to the Nightwing’s displeasure, of course.

On one hand, the young Damian wants to take revenge for Ra’s al Ghul’s murder while on the other hand is Batman’s guidance that challenges his initial training. And then there is Deathstroke on the ‘stroke’ of creating his own army of super assassins with the help of a kidnapped scientist. Does good win over evil or does evil manages to triumph over the good is what this animated flick is all about.

What makes Son of Batman better than its predecessors is that it gives you the pleasure of watching a carefree Robin and a careful Batman side by side after a long time. The chit chat between the father and the son is as ‘Batman-Robin’ as it can get since they fight over everything from striking the first blow to driving the Bat mobile!

Son of Batman is one of the better animated movies from the house of DC. It has a storyline, well-written characters and gives insight into the world of the Caped Crusader from the angle of a parent. The lines that Alfred delivers on Damian’s entry into their lives are hilarious at best, while the action scenes are always welcome. Overall, a complete package that will not disappoint fans of Batman!
