DACCA: Polling in East Pakistan began today [Nov 10] amidst great enthusiasm. Though the results of the election were not available from the districts, the polling was reported to be heavy at all centres in towns as well as in villages. Women voters also turned up in large numbers to cast their votes.
Elections were held in five Town Committees in Dacca and seven Union Committees in Narayanganj today. A prominent member of the National Assembly, Mr. Ali Amjad Khan, was defeated by a Combined Opposition Parties’ candidate, Abdur Rashid, by 151 votes to 80. Another Combined Opposition Parties member, Qurban Ali, was elected from Wari Town Committee.
The Awami League General Secretary, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, claimed tonight that out of 57 successful candidates in Dacca city, 54 belonged to the Opposition. The Treasurer of the East Pakistan Muslim League, Syed Mohsin Ali, was defeated by a COP candidate from Wari unit in Dacca city. According to a Press note issued by the Provincial Government, in Khulna District, “…the rifle of an Ansar while being loaded went off accidentally, hitting Abbas Ali, a voter, who was standing nearby. Abbas was immediately rushed to Saddar Hospital where he has been progressing satisfactorily. ... The commotion caused by the incident soon subsided, and voting resumed.”
