GUJRAT: A police officer on Wednesday night murdered a detained man with an axe, later alleging that the man had committed blasphemy.
45-year-old Jhang resident Syed Tufail Haider was arrested a day earlier for wounding two people from a locality in Gujrat. According to police authorities, Tufail came to Madina Syedan in Gujrat three days ago to attend a majlis.
During interrogation, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Faraz Naveed got into a heated argument with Tufail and struck him on the neck with an axe lying in the room, a blow which resulted in immediate death.
He later accused Tufail of making derogatory remarks against companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), with other police officials saying the arrested man was mentally unsound.
“Tufail was kept in the lock-up but he continued uttering derogatory remarks and hurled abuse at policemen. He looked like a malang (wandering preacher) and seemed mentally imbalanced,” duty officer Ali Raza told AFP.
“Assistant Sub-Inspector Faraz Naveed, 36, became very angry on hearing the derogatory remarks against the companions of the Prophet and he killed the detainee with an axe in the lock up,” he added.
Police have arrested ASI Faraz Naveed and taken the axe into custody. The body of the slain man has been sent to a local hospital for a postmortem.
Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of Tufail Haider's murder and has ordered a further investigation of the incident.

The latest incident comes two days after a Christian couple was burnt to death in a brick kiln in Kot Radha Kishan for allegedly desecrating pages of the Holy Quran. The woman, mother of three, was pregnant. The incident provoked condemnation from the government with the prime minister saying the government will bring to book those responsible.
Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in the country, with even unproven allegations often prompting mob violence. Anyone convicted, or even just accused, of insulting Islam, risks a violent and bloody death at the hands of vigilantes.
A Christian woman, Aasia Bibi, has been on death row since November 2010 after she was found guilty of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during an argument with a Muslim woman.
An elderly British man with severe mental illness, sentenced to death for blasphemy in January, was shot by a prison guard last month.
Mumtaz Qadri, an elite force policeman jailed for murdering Punjab governor Salman Taseer, in a religiously-motivated attack incited the prison guard to shoot the elderly British man convicted of blasphemy, according to an internal inquiry.

The so-called blasphemy law is one of the most stupid and evil laws ever passed in Pakistan. It is used an excuse by anybody who wants to grab the property of the minorities and now even by the police to kill people in custody. Apologists for the law say that it is designed to protect the feelings of all religions, not just of Islam. This is a very stupid attitude because it simply cannot work. Every day that the Christians say that Jesus is the son of God, they blaspheme against Islam. Every day that Muslims say that Jesus is not the son of God they blaspheme against the Christian faith. Belief and faith are private matters, and the truth or otherwise of statements belonging to these areas should quite properly be left to Allah to decide for He "is the best of deciders."

The policeman killed the malang, seems to be of extremist views, otherwise there is no legal / religious justification to kill the guy even he said / did ( which unacceptable ) as claimed by the policeman. Even in the law, the punishment of such type of act is not death. People should be stopped and discouraged to not hurt the religious feelings of others by saying irresponsible things, but killing is the far big crime then derogatory remarks and it can not be justified in anyway. Is this what Late Gen Zia anticipated when he rolled-out the BLASPHEMY law? I hope the new govt will come to their senses asap and repeal all such laws which are being misused by a few idiots - who are bent putting Pakistan to shame

Had the perpetrators been given due punishment in previous similar cases, these incidents would not have been happening on regular basis. This is all the result of inaction against culprits by the people at the helm of affairs.

This shows how people are acting in the name of BLASPHEMY. Taking law in own hand shows new type of Taliban is rising up within Pakistan itself. People are just misusing this BLASPHEMY for own interest. There are lots of cases occurring such brutal killings. It should be stopped. The government should take strict actions against such culprits who are misusing laws.
Religion should be for peace and patience for humanity. Mentality of people should be changed.
Please live in peace and let others live on their own fate. Don’t kill others..

The easiest lame excuse is blasphemy since no witnesses are required nor are any witnesses forthcoming for fear of being killed. There is no solution coming from current gutless leaders. Give exemplary punishments in public and release all those who are behind bars for cooked up blasphemy.
Did the Holy Prophet teach this? Did he punish people who hurled abuses at him? Where are the so-called Ulema and maulvis and why are they not coming out in full force and boldly declaring this as a totally un-Islamic act? They should also be punished for spreading such hatred and now keeping quiet at such atrocities. Blasphemy law should be abrogated TODAY and any one who brings this word as an excuse against another should first be punished severely.
The nations of the UN should together protest against such brutality, give no monetary assistance to Pakistan and boycott the country until they write in to law that blasphemy law is abolished and any one who brings this as a case against another will be severely punished.

@Salman Only by naming a country Islamic Republic doesn't mean you are an Islamic State or Champion of Islam. Why we are eager to kill someone and not forgive or hand over to Law. Take example of Fatha-e-Mecca where Prophet (P.B.U.H) forgive Hinda (who chew liver of Hazrat Hamza) and didn't take any revenge. What about Hur (commander of Yazeed's Army, stopped water for Imam Hussain and his children but still Imam Hussain forgive him and today he's remembered as a Martyr. Forgiveness is best kind of revenge. It will be majority's responsibility to protect the life, rights and custom of minorities not vice versa. It shows that there is only one that rules in Pakistan and it is Gandasa / KK or TT law.

These incidents show the disease and corrosion has spread through the system, mullahs, peasants, policemen, lawyers, judges all have provided examples of this maniacal mindset and why should one doubt that other sections of the society are equally affected. Who is going to stand up and change this mindset that has developed over decades. I would bet that there are many Muslim even outside of Pakistan who feel that death is justified for anyone who insults the Prophet, peace be on him, or Quran or Islam or repudiates Islam.
Muslims in general and Pakistani Muslims in particular need the 'Reformer' who can inspire them with the true spirit of Islam that made it a bastion of goodness for mankind 1500 years ago. In fact, that is what the Prophet of Islam had prophesied too that in latter days Muslims are going to need the 'Reformer' and God will send one. A sincere Muslim who believes in the truth of Quran and the Prophet, peace be on him, should search and look for the "Reformer".

No Sikh has ever been killed in india. And of course, we don't elect and elevate those as PM who initiate and complete a massacre successfully."
Well, indians are what they are. I thank Almighty Allah and those who got us separated from them. Having said that, we do NOT have to take the matters in our own hands. Every accused must be given a full chance to defend him/herself in a court of law.

May Allah be praised, a gross misuse of the Blasphemy law, which is now coming to haunt the same majority community which wickedly intended to harm a simple, defenceless minority community.
What more SHAME can there be, when the Holy Quran clearly states, that it is the duty of Muslims to protect the life and property of it's weakest amongst them, their minority communities.
In this instance the followers are doing the opposite, which is mind boggling.

Govt officials have to stop ordering never ending and unless investigations and start hanging these barbarians that kill in the name of religion. Unless these animals are sent to the gallows this will continue to happen. Step 2 is to change the blasphemy law. It’s a medieval law that has no place in our religion or our country.

Make Pakistan a secular country where religion is a person's personal business and has nothing to do with the state. Follow on actions from this philosophy would be:
1. Remove "Islamic" from the name of the country
2. Passport should not ask for the person's religion
3. Remove all laws that mention religion including the Blasphemy law
4. Make citizens of the country proud to be called a Pakistani regardless of their faith or lack of faith in religion

@Shafiq they did not believe the story of the prosecution, they believed witnesses, and it was a trial by jury open to all. In US courts rarely believe prosecutors. That's why there was is so much opposition to trying terrorists in local courts instead of military.

Every time a suspected accused in blasphemy case is murdered , Chief Minister and P.M. called
for immediate report.This time P. M. held meeting with his senior political and bureaucrat advisers to tackle this problem . Punjab Chief Minister announced five million and a plot of land to the family. Along with calling for report and holding meetings,P.M. should have ordered execution of murderers of blasphemy convicts like Mumtaz Qadri that will send better message to curtail such accusation and murders. If P.M. is scared to take this decision he should call parliament meeting and get endorsement from the house.

For me, my seculat constitution has grater value than my religious text. I would love to sacrifice my life for my constitution that is secular and so far able to governs billion plus population in last 64 years.

Such a shameful act. Government should punish everyone involved is such heinous crime. Delays in punishment will attract other criminals to take advantage of this dysfunctional system. Sectarianism and Religious intolerance is much bigger issue than corruption. If the Government hesitates to step into this matter wholeheartedly, It can consume the whole country and more innocents will loose their lives. Mumtaz Qadri, still unpunished and hailed as hero by many, has already created worst precedent and will create more Qadris. Wake up people, wake up Government.

At least this incident is being talked about in the Pakistani media. They are not justifying it by saying the victim was a criminal or terrorist and therefore he deserved what he got.
Compare it to our attitude with regard to the murder of Kauser Bi which was completely ignored by the media & the public in India . The Gujarat Govt itself admitted before the Supreme Court of India through their Senior counsel KTS Tulsi , that Kauser Bi was kept in a farmhouse outside Ahmedabad and then murdered by Gujarat ATS officers and her body was BURNT to destroy evidence. Her crime ? She was the wife of Sohrabuddin who had been killed 2 days prior to her death
Or consider our attitude towards the fake encounter of a 19 yr old girl who was already in police custody and our eagerness to retroactively declare her a terrorist to justify her murder.

@Akram it was a case in Orissa not in Gujrat and it was more than 15 years ago. Accused is on life imprisonment because and petition is filed against him for converting it into death sentence.
We have had our shares of riots and it might happen in future also because its big country with size able minorities population . So these things are bound to happen. Hindu have also died in these riots but we dont have these cases on daily bases if i am not wrong i have heard more than 8 such cases in 2014 itself when Mob attacked minorities communities for almost no reason .
