Punjab win gold in women’s U-19 softball

LAHORE: Punjab outplayed Islamabad 14-3 to win the gold medal while Sindh bagged silver by beating Balochistan 14-6 on the final day of the second Women’s U-19 Softball Championship at the Central Punjab Ground on Monday.

Punjab, who won all their four matches in the event, were led superbly against Islamabad by captain Fareeha Anwar who topscored with 4 runs.

Sindh, winning three of their four matches, played brilliantly against Balochistan while Islamabad bagged the third spot.

Pakistan Federation Baseball secretary Syed Khawar Shah was the chief guest on the occasion and distributed the prizes and certificates among the teams. He lauded the standard of softball displayed by the teams during the event and expressed confidence that the girls softball team will soon be ranked amongst the best teams in Asia.

Head coach Asif Azeem, speaking on the occasion, pointed out that they many talented softball players have been discovered through the back-to-back men and women events held here in Lahore and they will be forming the nucleus at the camps which will be set up for preparation of junior women’s softball event in Indonesia and the men’s qualifying rounds in Singapore this year.
