KARACHI, Sept 4: Various parts of sprawling Orangi Town and different blocks of Federal B’ Area are deprived of water for the last several days.

The hard-hit areas of Orangi Town include Orangi No 1, Fareed Nagar, Millatabad, Asif Nagar, Gulfamabad, sectors 1-A, 1-B, 1-C and the localities, situated in the vicinity of Qaddafi Chowk, while Federal B’ Area’s affected localities are its blocks 2, 15, 16, 17, 20 and 21.

Residents of Orangi complained that although they are without water for the last eight days, the water and sanitation department’s officials have not taken measures to restore supply to their locality.

They said that despite the fact that Orangi is supplied water after every five days, the officials concerned often fail to ensure supply on schedule, thereby leaving no choice for the area people but to either purchase water from the donkey-carts or consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.

A resident of Orangi’s Millatabad said it was beyond his comprehension that prior to the drying up of the Hub dam, they were being supplied water after every five days but now when the city has started getting 25mgd water from the Hub source, they are getting the supply for six hours only after every five days.

The area people have urged the city Nazim and the W&S department’s EDO to direct the officials to reduce the gap between their supply from five days to at least three days as it was not possible for them to store water for five days, besides the duration of supply be extended to the previous 20 hours.

In F. B. Area, people said they were experiencing acute water shortage for the last five or six days, but the officials concerned have not yet managed to restore their normal supply.

A resident of Federal B’ Area’s Block 2 (Hussainabad) regretted that although about 50 houses of his locality, starting from House No 74/2, are deprived of water for the last one month, the officials concerned were taking no measures to restore their supply.

Complaints of persisting water shortage have also been received from the residents of Al-Hamra Society, Banglore Town, Dhoraji, Adamjee Nagar.
