JACOBABAD, Aug 31: Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly, said that the greater Thal canal and Kalabagh Dam would directly hit the interests of Sindh and wondered why the federation was out to construct these controversial projects without the consent of the provinces.

He said this while addressing a public gathering of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Committee held at the District Council Chowk on Saturday.

Rasool Bux Palejo of the Awami Tehrik said Sindh was always denied its water share.

He said Sindh was the main contributor of the federation where taxes were concerned, while it gets charitable pittance from the federal pool.

He said the construction of Panjnad, Mangla Dam and the Chashma-Jhelum link were to irrigate the lands of Punjab and attempts to render Sindh barren.

Dr Qadir Magsi said the government was propagating wrongly for the need to build the Kalabagh dam.

MMA leader Maulana Mohammad Azam, JUI leader Mohammad Azam Jahangiri, and Muslim League (N) leader Mohammad Afzal Gujjar also addressed the gathering.

OUR SUKKUR CORRESPONDENT ADDS: The Kalabagh dam and the Thal canal will be constructed over the dead bodies of the people of Sindh. The people of Sindh will oppose these projects upto the last drop of their blood.

This was announced by leaders of the Anti-Thal Canal Committee at public gatherings at Thal, Kandhkot and Tangwani on Sunday. Speaking at the National Bank Chowk, Thal, Mr Palejo said up to now more than 18 water accords had taken place but all had been in vain.

Mr Khuhro said issue of the Kalabagh dam again, which showed that they gave no importance to the people’s views.

Later in the evening, leaders of the action committee arrived in Kashmor. A public gathering was held at the National Bank Chowk, where participants shouted slogans of ‘Go Musharraf, Go.’
