LAHORE, Aug 30: The federal government has launched a project to sensitize the public about the concept of human rights in collaboration with the Norwegian Agency for Development and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The government’s input will be in the form of institutional support.

The project was also aimed at protecting legal rights of the poor, CM’s adviser on human rights Rana Ijaz Ahmad Khan told a delegation of human rights activists here on Saturday.

Under the project, the adviser said, four-tier planning had been chalked out that included mass awareness through media, localized training of government officials, especially the police staff, curriculum development and the establishment of a human rights study centre at the university level.

Regarding curriculum development, he said, the objective of this component was to develop an effective mechanism for the promotion and protection of human rights through educational activities.

Mr Khan said the government had also prioritized the agenda for the welfare of hapless petty offenders languishing in jails due to lack of access to the judicial system.
