PESHAWAR, July 23: While many high school buildings in the provincial metropolis are in dire need for repair work, the city district government lacks funds for the purpose in the current financial year, officials said.

According to a survey conducted by Dawn, buildings of high schools are in a pathetic condition and sorely need repairs.

The historical buildings of Government High School for Boys, Peshawar City-I, and Government High School for Boys, Nanakpura, located on the main GT Road, are in a state of neglect.

“I have told the principals of the two schools that they can utilize the pupils’ fund for the repair of the buildings as no funds had been allocated for the purpose over the last ten years,” Executive District Officer for Schools and Literacy Ayaz Khan told Dawn.

In the current fiscal year, an amount of Rs4.8 million is allocated for basic facilities like water supply, construction of boundary walls and latrines in the middle and high schools of Peshawar district.

“We are asking different schools to place their demands so that basic facilities could be provided to those which lack it. We give preference to girls schools as they are in greater need of such a facility,” sources in the education department said.

Building repair fund is only granted to the primary schools, whereas the middle and high schools remain deprived of this grant since 1993-94.

In the current financial year, primary schools were granted Rs3.25 million for repairs and Rs2.445 million for purchase of furniture, the sources added.
