LAHORE: The PPP has asked the government and the protesting parties to show maturity and devise a mechanism to look into the rigging allegations.

“The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s demand of the prime minister’s resignation, conditional or otherwise, is not just as there is no constitutional provision to this effect,” PPP Punjab secretary general Tanvir Ashraf Kaira said here on Monday.

He said demanding the premier’s resignation would set a bad precedent with dangerous consequences for the political system.

“The resignation demand is clearly against the imperatives of the administration of justice,” he said, adding the fate of the incumbent prime minister should be determined by the outcome of the impartial investigation into the allegations.

Mr Kaira said the PPP too had termed the May 2013 elections rigged but accepted the results for the sake of the continuity of the political process.

“The PPP will not let democracy derail come what may,” he said.
