ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reinstated the membership of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf’s (PTI) Syed Hafeezuddin in the Sindh Assembly.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk reinstated Hafeezuddin’s membership.

The lawmaker had been disqualified by an election tribunal on August 7, following which he challenged the tribunal's decision in the apex court.

In a statement, Hafeezuddin said that despite his reinstatement he would follow the decision of his party’s leadership, adding that he was tendering his resignation as per Imran Khan’s directives.

Hafeezuddin had bagged 15,322 votes from the Karachi PS-93 (Banaras-Mominabad) constituency in the May 2013 polls, defeating Abdul Razzaque (11,800 votes) of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI).

Declaring Hafeezuddin's victory null and void on August 7, election tribunal judge Justice (retd) Zafar Ahmed Sherwani had announced that the seat would instead go to the closest contender Razzaque, who had challenged Hafeezuddin's victory.
