ISLAMABAD, July 21: President Gen Pervez Musharraf has sought a detailed briefing on three big irrigation projects and financial performance of the Water and Power Development Authority on Tuesday.

An official told Dawn on Monday that the president was concerned over the controversy on the Rs30.5 billion Greater Thal Canal project and Rs18 billion Rainee Canal project.

Similarly, he has asked the Wapda management to update him on the Rs64 billion project for raising of the Mangla Dam and financial performance of the utility during the last financial year.

Wapda Chairman Zulfiqar Ali Khan and his financial team would brief the president. Finance and water and power ministers and secretaries are also expected to attend the meeting.

A Wapda official, when contacted, said the president wanted to know about the concerns of various provinces on the Greater Thal and Rainee Canal projects.

He said the president would be told that a Rs216 billion revenue collection target for the year 2002-03 had been achieved but the line losses reduction target could not be achieved, which stood at 25.5 per cent.
