ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday directed special chartered flights to be engaged on top priority for the evacuation of stranded Pakistani nationals from Libya.

He gave the directives while chairing a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister Office to review the efforts being made by the relevant quarters for the repatriation of Pakistani nationals stranded in Libya.

The prime minister has further directed the ministry of foreign affairs and other concerned agencies to take all necessary actions for the safe and swift evacuation of the stranded Pakistanis.

More than 200 people have been killed in the past two weeks in fighting between rival militias in Tripoli and Benghazi.

Situation in Libya has been deteriorating for two months and many countries have already evacuated their nationals from the country.

It may be mentioned that around 6,000 Pakistanis are to be evacuated with immediate effect. The Pakistani embassy in Libya has also been making hectic efforts to repatriate Pakistan nationals in Libya at the earliest.

A crisis management cell has also been established at the ministry of foreign affairs to monitor the evolving security situation in Libya and to coordinate efforts for evacuation of Pakistanis.
