KARACHI July 20: The provincial population welfare minister, Imtiaz Ahmad Shaikh, has expressed hope that active cooperation between government and non-governmental organizations would help checking rising population growth.

He stated this during a visit to office of the Marie Stopes Society, an NGO playing active role in checking population growth the other day.

Underlining the role of NGOs and media in combating the scourge of population explosion, he pointed out that they could play crucial role in creating awareness among the masses about negative aspects of large families.

Applauding credible performance of the Marie Stopes Society in combating rising storm of population spread, he expressed hope that other NGOs working in this sector would discharge their obligations with the similar approach.

Prominent among those present on the occasion included, federal secretary population welfare, Abdul Rasheed; provincial secretary, Mushtaq Ahmad Memon and others.

The managing director of the society, Dr Mohsina Bilgrami, informed the minister that through 38 centres, mini-centers, mobile camps and other services, the society had been providing quality reproductive health facilities in all rural and urban areas of the country.

“Population welfare and health departments, besides other organizations have extended considerable support for advancing the cause of the society,” she added.—PPI
