ISLAMABAD, July 19: An accountability court on Saturday extended the remand of Peer Mukarram-ul-Haq, former managing director Printing Corporation of Pakistan (PCP), for three more days in a corruption case.

Judge Mansoor Ali Khan directed the prosecution to produce the accused in the court on Tuesday (July 22). Investigating officer Rai Abdul Hai, Assistant Director Federal Investigating Agency (FIA), sought extension in the remand of the accused.

However, Sardar Latif Khosa, the counsel for the accused, objected to his request, arguing that the prosecution had failed to bring out anything concrete against his client during their four-month investigation.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan People’s Party has denounced the alleged continued torture of Pir Mukarramul Haq and said that UN conventions will be invoked to expose victimization of political opponents by the Musharraf regime.

In a statement on Saturday, the party urged human rights bodies and members of civil society to raise their voice against what they said unbearable torture being inflicted on Pir Mukarramul Haq, the brother of PPP leader Pir Mazharul Haq and husband of Punjab MPA Farzana Raja, in the NAB custody to force his family members change political loyalties.

The statement was issued by PPP MNAs Naveed Qamar and Shah Mahmood Qureshi after attending the accountability court proceedings in Rawalpindi, in which the court extended Pir Mukarram‘s custody in the NAB by another three days.

The Saturday’s remand was the fourth in a series since his arrest on June 20. The statement said that Pir Mukarram told the PPP leaders how he was being humiliated and tortured.
