NAWABSHAH, July 18: Gastroenteritis has turned out to be an epidemic in Nawabshah district after the recent rains as one person, identified as Mohammad Younus, 75, died of the disease in the People’s Medical College Hospital, Nawabshah, on Friday, and nine others were admitted in serious condition.

Seven people were admitted on Friday. They were identified as Bashira, 70, Ronaq Ali, 30, Nusrat Bibi, 20, Fehmida, 20, Shakila, 10, Aneela, 7, and Shumaila, 2.

Dozens of cases of gastroenteritis were reported from the clinics of Nawabshah town, Daur, Bandhi and Sakrand.

Rainwater, which has mixed with sewage, has accumulated on the roads in Manuabad, Essarpur, Taj Colony, Camp No2, Kamora Colony, Mariam Road, Azeem Colony and other areas making it impossible for the people to move around. Besides, it has also increased the risk of diseases like gastroenteritis and cholera breaking out.

The residents of Nawabshah have strongly demanded that the district government take necessary steps immediately to control gastroenteritis from spreading and clear the roads of sewage.

DIES: Johar Khatoon, 55, member Sindh Council, PPP, and former president PPP ladies wing, Nawabshah district, died due to protracted illness here on Thursday.

She had been suffering from cancer since long but even then she had been actively participating in social activities.
