ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (Pemra) warned cable operators to refrain from indulging in any activity that was against Pemra laws and the terms and conditions of their licenses.

The warning was issued after authorities received several complaints regarding telecast of unauthorised TV channels, excessive and vulgar CD channels, off-airing of Pemra licensed TV channels as well as frequent change of numbering and positioning of licensed TV channels.

A Pemra spokesman said cable TV operators had been explicitly cautioned that suspension of any Pemra licensed channel or changing channels’ positions on cable TV networks without permission from the authorities was illegal and ultra vires to the Pemra Ordinance, rules, regulations as well as the terms and conditions of their licenses.

"Pemra has also asked cable operators to immediately stop distribution of unauthorised TV channels as well as CD channels as any non-compliance would result in imposition of heavy fines, suspension or revocation of cable operators' licenses under the Pemra laws," the spokesman said in a written communique issued to all TV cable operators, a copy of which is available with Dawn.

The spokesman said Pemra had appealed to the general public to report any such violation by their cable TV service provider on Pemra's toll free number which is 0800-73672.

The complaints and suggestions can also be forwarded to Pemra through its web-based complaints form available at www.pemra.gov.pk, the spokesman said.
