RAWALPINDI, July 14: Rawalpindi were in control of their PCB Under-19 Inter-district Championship match against Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) after taking a 62-run first innings lead on the first day of their match at Army Cricket Ground on Monday.

Paceman Rizwan Akbar wrecked the AJK batting who had chosen to bat first by capturing four wickets as the visitors were dismissed for a paltry 111 in 47.2 overs.

Irfan Talib contributed 42 but the rest of his team-mates could not face the Rawalpindi attack in which off-spinner Usman Saeed and slow left-armer Khalid Mushtaq also claimed two wickets each.

In reply, Rawalpindi were powered by Shoaib Nasir and Waqas Zafar who scored 49 and 47 respectively to give a fine start to their side who finished the day at 173 for three. Captain Usman Saeed with 37 and Irfan Talib 24 were at the crease at close of play.

AJK left-arm spinner Irfan Talib picked up all the three wickets to fall in 14 overs.

At the KRL Stadium, Chakwal hit up 219 off 67.3 overs in their match against Islamabad. Owais Zia (34) and Mohammad Abid (33 not out) were the chief scorers.

But Islamabad bowlers gave away 38 extras before they could bowl out their rivals, Fayyaz Ahmed capturing four for 74.

When play ended for the day, Islamabad had replied with 93 for two with Imran Fazil giving them a good start by scoring 44.

In another match at Islamabad’s Shalimar Ground, Jhelum were in deep trouble at 35 for four after having dismissed Attock for 166.

Opting to bat first, Attock were spearheaded by Saqib Shah who hit 47 while Nadeem Sikander scored 34. Off-spinner Qasim Maqbool did a fine job by snaring four for 24. Syed Irfan and Atif Shahzad shared four wickets.

Nadeem Sikander and Asim Nawaz then pinned down Jhelum as they took two wickets each to leave their rivals facing a tough task.

Our Sports Correspondent adds from Lahore: A four-wicket burst by left-arm paceman Musa Haider and fine batting by opener Sohail Ahmed helped West Zone Blues earn a 148-run lead against North Zone Whites at Model Town Ground.

Despite an unbeaten 58 by Umar Munawwar, North Zone Whites were dismissed for 88 in 36.2 overs with Musa picking up four for 13. Fellow pacer Wahab Riaz and leg-spinner Ghulam Mustafa shared the remaining wickets.

West Zone Blues, in reply, piled up 236 for seven in 51 overs at stumps thanks Sohail’s 117-ball 73, which included six boundaries. Sibtain Raza with 59, studded with nine fours, was the other main scorer.

North Zone Whites’ off-spinner Umar Munawar captured four for 49.

North Zone Blues on top in their game against East Zone Blues at LCCA Ground.

East Zone Blues were reeling at 51 for six after North Zone had made 177 in 70.2 overs.

Meanwhile, fight for a first innings lead was still on at Mughalpura Institute Ground where East Zone Whites are West Zone Whites playing.

Batting first, East Zone Whites were curtailed to 175 in 54.4 overs with off-spinner Ahmed Nasim taking five for 58.

Only Shahzad Siddiq with a fine 85-ball 73 knock saved East Zone Whites from a total collapse.

At draw of stumps, West Zone Whites were 100 for seven in  30 overs, still needing 75 runs for the lead.

APP adds from Karachi: Centuries by Khurram Manzoor and Faraz Patel were the highlights of Karachi region matches.

Opener Khurram Manzoor hammered 13 fours and two sixes in scoring 122 to help Zone-IV post 358 against Zone-II at TMC Ground.

Khurram put on 149 for the opening wicket with Wasim Abbas, who contributed 69 with four fours and a six while Fawwad Alam hammered a dashing 84, striking eight fours and a brace of sixes.

Zone-II replied with 13 for no loss.

At Asifabad Ground, opener Faraz Patel struck a superb 115 with 12 hits to fence as Zone-VII made 322 for eight in their 90 overs. At stumps, Zone-V were 15 for two.

Zone-I were all out for 210 against Zone-III at Student Ground. Zone-III, in reply, were 61 for no wicket.
