LAHORE: A police constable was gunned down while two others, including an assistant sub-inspector and a woman, were wounded in an encounter with gunmen on Sultan Mehmood Road, Baghbanpura, on Saturday.

Police arrested four suspects after a brief chase.

A police official told Dawn the police were alerted about the presence of some armed men in area. When police arrived at the scene, suspects opened indiscriminate fire at them and fled the scene.

Resultantly, police van driver Ikram, ASI Shabbir Hussain and a passerby woman suffered multiple bullet wounds. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where Ikram succumbed to his wounds. The condition of other two was stated to be stable.

He said a contingent of the police from nearby police stations was dispatched to the area. He said four suspects were arrested after a brief chase while their one accomplice managed to escape. Police seized weapons from them.

The police official identified one of the arrested suspects as Babar Butt of Manawan saying that the criminal record of the armed men is being verified.

No case was lodged till the filing of this report.
