Army chief sees multidimensional security threats to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Friday said that multidimensional security threats faced by the country require a high state of preparedness at all times.
General Sharif was visiting the Sonmiani Ranges and witnessed air defence firing exercises, an ISPR spokesman said in a statement issued from military headquarters in Rawalpindi.
Complete range of air defence weapons including guns and surface-to-air missiles were used in the exercise.
The army chief greatly appreciated the professionalism of participating units and standards achieved in engaging aerial targets.
“Highest standard of training and professionalism must remain our hallmark to accomplish the mission,” he said.
Earlier on arrival at the range, Gen Sharif was received by the commander of the Army Air Defence unit, Lieutenant-General Muhammad Zahid Latif Mirza, who also briefed him about the purpose of the exercises.
Gen Sharif’s visit follows an important meeting of the army’s top brass earlier this week which reviewed internal and external threats to Pakistan’s national security.

At the monthly Corps Commanders conference, Gen Sharif commended soldiers for their work despite “serious security and administrative challenges”, according to an ISPR press release.

The army chief caused quite a stir in government circles when he vowed at a Special Services Group base in Tarbela that the army would “resolutely preserve its own dignity and institutional pride”.
Gen Sharif’s comments were said to be made in the context of the army’s concern over the trial of former military ruler retired Gen Pervez Musharraf on the charge of high treason.

The statement had sent shockwaves through government circles and became the topic of debate for analysts and local media talk-show anchors.
Insiders the army is also not happy with the way the government is proceeding with its initiative of holding peace talks with militants involved in the killing of tens of thousands of Pakistani citizens and soldiers.

Pakistan has only internal threats, none other than by terror groups, the biggest is Tehrike Taliban. Afghanistan is not capable, has it own internal threats from the other Taliban, then Haqqani network. Then there is assumption of India, supporting Baloch rebels, still no real hard evidence had proved, instead the Indian Embassy has been attacked in Afghanistan. All the three wars with India, were started by Pakistan.

Pakistan Armed Forces are trained professional, but they they are subordinated, to Corrupt, Dishonest and Incompetent, politicians. Pakistan has to invent its own system, with the full participation of Armed Forces, in the government. Greek Democracy is Western idea it can not work in Pakistan.

The full tenure of the previous democratically elected govt and the passing of power through elections have been signs of democracy beginning to strike roots in Pakistan. But going through the media, it seems many people still prefer military dictatorships and that the Army still has considerable say in policies and governance of the country.
I hear reports that the Pak Army is a state-within-a-state, that it even runs businesses like road transport (the reason for the decay of the far more efficient rail network), sugar, textiles etc. That is mind boggling and unthinkable in India.

They would rather continue courtship with enemies of Pakistan just to avoid deadly attack on themselves. They will not allow Pakistan Army to go after the enemies of Pakistan within Pakistan. **SHAME!**

The biggest threat to Pakistan has been created by none other than the military and ISI. That is the threat of terrorists which these two organizations had harbored for years. To keep themselves in power, they will always sound paranoid so that they can get the support of masses when they overthrow a civilian elected government. The facts is that they have been responsible for Kashmir problem spiraling out of control, then losing East Pakistan, and now it will be Balochistan. We all know what KPK is going through. These are all gifts of military to Pakistan.

For first 30+ years , It was Indian threat which helped the Army loot the ex-chequer ( i.e national budget ) , then for the next 15 years , the army got involved in the Afghan Jehad and thus Help conceive, deliver and nourish the Jehadi culture , the next 15+ years till now , the generals got the nation involved not only in a War which was not ours but help establish the most violent monsters the talibans thus creating a threat within the society ........ No army in the world has neither counter productively fought rebels, separatist or extremists nor has concluded gorilla warfare. Such deadly and destructive fights typically last for decades at a very high price, both humanely and economically. People making such absurd pro military comments disgust me.
But just for the fun of it, I would love to see Pakistan run by a dictator style autocratic rule for the next century and be enforced with an Egyptian like culture. Army needs to fight these extremist on all fronts, at the borders, on the streets of every city and within neighborhoods, going door to door, arrest or execute suspicious people between the ages of 16-40, do a background check on every citizen, monitor citizens communications and finances, and restrict peoples free movement and put them in isolated zones.

Get that story sorted out first if you want the military to do anything about it. PML-N and PTI have virtually surrendered to the PTT. If the military does something unilaterally then people would cry about that moronic concept of "supremacy of parliament" being eroded. All of Army's advice to the PML-N government on the peace talks has gone by the way side. So first decide what exactly it is that you want to do then tell the military clearly what you expect. Enough confusion and mixed messages to the military.

The Pakistan Army does not want many of the issues to be resolved including Kashmir. Think about it e.g. if the Kashmir issue is resolved both Pak and India will not need to spend so much on military. In India military has been under control of the civilian government so they don't have much power anyways but Pakistan army stands to lose most. It can only be powerful and important by keeping the issues alive which justify their importance.

Terrorism and Violence is not something new in Pakistan, the measures to control and wipe them out should have been on the priority list of both the government and the armed forces much earlier. We have turned into a Nation who is their own worse enemy. It is easy to criticize and condemn others for our failures.
We are not the only Muslim Nation in the World, but why such a great level of terrorism and corruption prevails in our country. If there is no Mutual alliance between the Government and the armed forces, we can never overcome the negative elements. We are in Urgent need for Unity and there is no Powerful Weapon then Unity.

I agree with Zameer. If you were alive in 1965, you would know that it was Pakistan that actually lost before Ayub Khan ran to Tashkent for ceasefire.
1948 war was not fought by army but by FATA tribesmen because Gen Frank Messervy (then chief of Pakisan army) had refused to fight Indians. In defiance for Quaid's orders, he was retired and Gen Douglas Gracey took over but war was over then.

As in the past, I urge our military to take matters in their own hands, if they feel our political leaders are incompetent or unwilling to provide security to the nation. Holding talks with the insurgents was the worst mistake. They are terrorists and you don't negotiate with terror. You destroy them - and I am a firm believer that our military is capable of doing just that and will get all the support they want from our people. As much as I am "for" democracy, if we end up with crooks like Zardari or Sharif, I would rather be under the military rule. I hope our COAS will not wait for authorization from our Prime Minister and will act alone, if he has to, to bring security in our country.

What I see on the news is not good especially law and order situation from Karachi to Islamabad. If situation continues to deteriorate like this, I would prefer yet another Marshall Law and this time I would like to see one that takes most of civil liberties taken away from the people initially and harsh punishments in the open. Also, I would like to see quick trials and no mercy for bad guys who take law and order in their hands. I would like those guys dead in the hands of security forces even before the trial. It probably sounds crazy but this is what will fix out society. Also, opening of schools, trade schools, large scale engineering schools like India has will probably give hope to young people to do the right things. This current situation of no law and order has to be fixed once for all and sooner than later. I don't think Mr. Sharif know what he is doing. He got his third term and now should resign as is not capable at all to do what he was elected to do.

The enemy cadres within us are trying to rewrite the history to portray our army as the loser in all conflicts. India was soundly defeated in the 1948 war in which Pakistan liberated 40% of Kashmir. India got a good beating in the 1965 war, they took 30 years to admit. Indian government confirmed that they lost 95 planes in 1965 while claiming only 37 kills against our Air Force. Pakistan Airfore has claimed downing 100 Indian planes. India also got a good beating in Kargil losing two jets and the sole prisoner of war in this entire conflict was an Indian pilot. Our traitors sold Kargil for the price of a cup of coffee with the Clintons. Indian government has confirmed that India lost more soldiers in Kargil war than it did in 1971.

b) 90K soldiers surrendering in Dhaka - a world record of sorts in cowardly acts

d) Defense Housing Authorities - the biggest land mafia in Pakistan ever

g) The strategic depth nonse - leading to the taliban types

Army is the one and only institute in Pakistan that is not corrupt. Even the despicable Zia-ul-Haq was not corrupt. None of the Army rulers made palaces for themselves nor deposited billions of dollars in the overseas secret accounts. If a army general makes a bungalow or gets a grant of a few dozen agricultural acres after his long service it is not a sin. In our long history if the country had made any economic progress it was during the tenure of an army man at the helm. The civilian governments have given us nothing but corruption and robbed the people and the poor country with both hands. The army generals are highly trained professionals and know how to run an efficient administration. I do not see any issue with amending the constitution that will provide the Chief of Army Staff a path to the Presidentship of the country. All the ministers shall be selected from the professionals in the relevant field. The members of the assemblies shall be selected based upon their qualifications and experience. In the other words our government shall comprise of honest qualified citizens, instead of the jokers we get in the name of the democracy.

That is why our enemies hate our army. General Zia left our per-capita purchasing power parity at $2600 in 1988, over 30% ahead of India. After suffering through a decade of "democracy" we were behind India when general Musharraf took over.

Well everyone today is arguing that the army should take over but if i may ask why should they. The army took over expelling nawaz Sharif and Musharaf came to power. Musharaf took the country's economy from shambles to about 7% growth rate a year, secondly the threat of terrorism was also being dealt with quite efficiently. But how did the Pakistani population respond we cried and we took to the streets when that corrupt chief justice was expelled by Musharaf when that episode ended we brought the PPP into power who under Zardari were corrupt ineffective, power hungry and after they went we brought nawaz Sharif into power so i ask why should the army take over to get humiliated once more, so that the Pakistani population takes to the street in protest once again.

General Raheel and those that matter in the armed forces may please understand the woes of the common pakistanis. Like the previous govt of PPP the govt of PMLN too is not doing anything to deal with the terrorism. they are too involved in keeping happy the saudis and the bahrainis and other arab bedouins. why don't they realise that it is pakistan that made them what they are today why don't they keep interest of pakistan above all other interests.
Can they be reminded that it is not Musharraf but PML N whose actions tentamount to high treason. Does anybody has the guts to show mirror to PML N.

The present Pak chief sees multi-dimensional security threats whereas the previous chief Gen Kayani sighted internal threat as the gravest but did nothing to safe-guard the citizens as thousands were killed by the militants. It is not wise only to identify the threat perceptions facing the country, but take appropriate action on the ground which has been lacking so far inviting criticism from all and sundry.

Corruption in Pakistan is deep rooted! It does not matter whether you are in the military or are a politician - greed overtakes you, as soon as you take power. The only difference between a military ruler and a civilian ruler is - a civilian ruler robs the country blind and does not do anything, since he has no authority over the military and the military ruler also grabs money, but has authority over the armed forces and can direct them to protect the homeland. End result - military ruler is better than the civilian ruler.

India always starts wars with Pakistan. India should give freedom to Kashmiries which want independence from India. Pakistan gave freedom to Bengalis in the end. Indians are in the wrong as always. Do you agree with Kashmir issue. Same as Palestinian. This is the main reason Pakistanis hate Indian people. If Kashmir is free then we can have the most peaceful region in Asia.
