LAHORE: Wapda with 96 points won the 60th National Weightlifting Championships at the Punjab University Old Campus gymnasium here on Thursday.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) with 59 points and Punjab (57 points) remained second and third, respectively. Pakistan Railways registering 52 points finished fourth.

Overall, Wapda claimed six gold medals, out of a total of eight on stake.

On the last day, Wapda earned gold medals in the 85kg, 94kg and 105kg classes. International Mustaqeem Butt of the HEC improved his personal best by lifting 150kg in snatch and 177kg in clean and jerk to record an aggregate of 327kg, which helped him earn gold medal.

Earlier, Habib Asghar seized gold medal for Wapda in the 85kg category, lifting an aggregate of 300kg. Ali Shan of the HEC and Asim of Punjab remained second and third, respectively.

In 95kg, Wapda’s Usman Rathore snatched gold medal, also lifting 300kg. Anas Javed of Punjab bagged silver and Railways’ Sibtain bronze.

Similarly, in 105kg, Haroon Shaukat of Wapda brought the third consecutive gold medal for Wapda as he lifted 325kg. Sajid Rasool of Railways and Tahir Butt of Wapda earned second and third spot, respectively.

In the category of over 105kg, HEC’s Mustaqeem clinched gold medal. He was followed by Abdullah Butt (HEC) and Saqib (Railways).

Retired Lt Gen Syed Arif Hassan, Pakistan Olympic Association president, was the chief guest and awarded the prizes to the winners.

Results: 85kg: Habib Asghar (Wapda) 130+170=300; Ali Shan (HEC) 125+145=270; Asim (Punjab) 110+140=250. 94kg: Usman Rathore (Wapda) 135+165=300; Anas Javed (Punjab) 125+151=276; Sibtain (Railways) 120+152=272.

105kg: Haroon Shaukat (Wapda) 145+180=325; Sajid Rasool (Railways) 135+177=312; Tahir Butt (Wapda) 138+173=311.

Over 105kg: Mustaqeem Butt (HEC) 150+177=327; Abdullah Butt (HEC) 137+170=307; Saqib (Railways) 120+160=280.
