QUETTA: Iranian border guards again fired mortar shells into Pakistani territory on Wednesday, a security official said.

The official who requested not to be named, told Dawn.com that Iranian border guards fired two rockets in Peshak area of Balochistan's Panjgur district.

He said no fatalities were reported as a result of the mortar shells.

"They exploded with a loud bang causing panic in the bordering town," said the official.

This incident comes three days after Iranian guards fired five mortar shells into the same border area on Monday.

No fatalities occurred as a result of that incident as well.

Iranian border guards have repeatedly violated Pakistani territory in the recent past.

A week ago, Pakistan and Iran decided to form a joint border committee to review border violations, illegal movement, infiltration and a number of other issues relating to the long border between the two countries.

A three day joint border commission meeting was held in Quetta a few days back to find common ground in order to ensure legal movement and avoid infiltration and border violations at the Pak-Iran border.

Chief Secretary Balochistan, Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad led the Pakistani side whereas Deputy Governor Sistan-Balochistan Ali Asghar Shikari led the Iranian delegation during the meeting.

The kidnapping of five Iranian border guards by Jaish ul Adl (Party of Justice) prompted the two countries to work together to ensure the recovery of the soldiers.

The Jaish ul Adl, a Sunni militant group, had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of the border guards.

It provides yet more proof that the undergirding logic of public authority in Pakistan is legal and extra-legal coercion rather than legitimised consent.
