Moin Khan appointed new head coach

LAHORE: Pakistan on Tuesday appointed former captain Moin Khan as the head coach of the national team, replacing Australian Dav Whatmore whose two-year contract expired last month.

Khan, 42, was shortlisted along with another former captain and ex-coach Waqar Younis by a four-man committee which included former captain Javed Miandad, Intikhab Alam and Wasim Akram earlier this week.

The decision came after a lengthy management committee meeting under the chairmanship of Najam Sethi who replaced Zaka Ashraf on Monday.

The decision came as a blow to Younis who was regarded as favourite to regain the post he left in 2011 but Ashraf's sacking led to him not being selected.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed told reporters Khan will coach the team for this month's Asia Cup and next month's World Twenty20 -- both to be held in Bangladesh.

“Khan has been appointed head coach on the recommendations of the coach committee and since we have no cricket until October this year we will review his contract after the two tours,” said Ahmed, the fourth member of the coach committee.

Khan played 69 Tests and 219 one-day internationals for Pakistan in the 1990s and 2000s. He has also coached the Pakistani and Indian domestic teams but never an international team.

Khan has been team manager since July this year. Former paceman Zakir Khan, a director in the PCB, takes over as manager for the two tours.

Pakistan had former Australian batsman Whatmore as head coach from March 2012 to last month.

Former opening batsman Shoaib Mohammad, son of batting legend Hanif Mohammad, meanwhile has been appointed as fielding coach to replace Englishman Julian Fountain whose contract also expired last month.

Another former captain Zaheer Abbas was appointed “chief cricket consultant” and will accompany the team on tours, said Ahmed.

Abbas, known as Asia's Don Bradman, will be in charge of batting.

Former captain Aamir Sohail's appointment as chief selector last week was declared null and void, with former Test batsman Azhar Khan taking his place.

Bowling coach Mohammad Akram's contract is also renewed for another two years, said Ahmed.

I don't mean any disrespect to Shoaib Mohammad, but I feel that a foreign fielding coach is necessary for Pakistan. Our standards seem to have improved by miles since Julian Fountain was introduced,

Waqar would have been a better choice but Moin Khan is ok too. He was a fighting cricketer. Hope to see his work bearing fruits. Shoiab Mohammed is definetly a good choice. He was the best fielder Pakistan has produced. Calm, controlled and focused. He can also help with batting.

Well done good decision .thanks PCB is free from hijackers .Moin khan and Zaherr Abbas r superb and honest cricketers .At last dark era of zaka and his allies r finished .so no more corruption in PCB.They damaged the whole democratic system of cricket from last 3 years .

**Moeen Khan** has a spirit of great warriors, atlast a good coach long after Intikhab Alam. Surprised about **Shoaib Muhammad** as statistically, doesn't match the post. I think he is jobless, so he is considered with good friends in the pavilion. **Akram** should retain until Wasim Akram is not agreed for a bowling coach.

Look at the people appointing Moin Khan as Head Coach. Wasim Akram, who always supported him and sidelined others during his time as a captain. Najam Sethi, who first appointed him as Chief selector, then as Manager and now as Head Coach. I looks like the PIA ex-employees (Akram, Zaheer and Moin) have been united for a re-union knowing that PIA will be privatized. I respect Shoaib Mohammad, whose previous performances suggests that he was a phenomenal fielder of his team. Moin was a fantastic player but not really deserves to be a head coach. Mohsin Khan was ideal as suggested by his track record being a coach. He is attitude can be seen when he decline to apologize when Pakistan's recently poor show against Zimbabwe when we lost the test. We lost 1st ever test match at Karachi under his leadership as well. Good luck green shirts but PCB is bunch of clowns with the most inconsistent policy

Pakistan needs a pure pace bowler like Wasim or waqar to oversee the bowling ! A batting great to see to the batting ! Someone like Miandad ( who overseas tactics as well) A fielding coach preferably a foreigner like Jonty Rhoads and a head coach like zaheer abbass or Mohsin khan. In the selection department I don't know what Amir Sohail can do??? Where is Rameez Raja in all of this ??? Why can't khan sahib be a selector ?? I don't think anyone else had the same eye for talent. Pakistan needs the old flavour and flair of our cricket back !!!! Please !!!!

I cannot agree more with farukh's comment here.. absolutely spot on . we definitely need a foreign fielding coach if not the head coach or bowling coach ..out of all these ridiculous selections made here only zaheer abbas seems alright to me ..and i am afraid that Pak cricket will once again tumble down as they did in past few years ago.. just when they looked good this shit happened.. fans be ready to be disappointed as our team isn't gonna do too well in Asia Cup and Worldt20..what a blow even before the start ..shame on PCB.

A very good decision of selecting Moin Khan as head coach; I believe he is the right man for this job!!!! Also a good decision of voiding the appointment of Aamir loser Sohail; there is no place for damaged goods in PCB - Well Done Sethi!!!! May the force be with Pakistan Cricket Team!!!!

Amid uncertainty as to whether Najam sethi will remain as Chairman PBC, Moin Khan should not have accepted the post of Head Coach. Because if Zaka Ashraf returns as Chairman PBC, there is a possibility of Moin Khan's appointment being cancelled.
