LAHORE: All the 478 work-charged workers of the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) who performed duties during the last three months will get their wages by Feb 10.
A decision to this effect was taken by Wasa Managing Director Dr Javed Iqbal on the recommendations of agency’s principal officers, said a source on Saturday.
Wasa deputy managing director (operations), directors of admn, finances and revenue, planning and development besides engineering, recommended that the agency would require the services of work-charged workers not only to desilt the sewerage system and drains ahead of monsoon but also to keep its tubewells running round-the-clock during summer.
Budgetary constraints had resulted into stoppage of payment to work-charged workers hired by Wasa on a seasonal basis. The workers had staged a protest demonstration at Wasa head office in Gulberg.
Later, during a meeting between representatives of the Wasa Employees Welfare (Phool) Union and the agency managing director, it was decided that all the work-charged workers who performed duties during the last three months would be paid their wages on the basis of attendance registers and recommendations of all the officers concerned.
Union Secretary-General Shahid Mahmood told Dawn the process to make payments to work-charged workers had been started.
