PESHAWAR: Polio virus has been detected in an 11-month old girl child in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa's provincial capital, the first polio case in the city for 2014.

The EPI Programme KP in-charge Dr Janbaz Afridi told Dawn.Com that the polio virus has been confirmed in an 11-month-old child in Dehri Bagbanan area, which is located on the outskirts of Peshawar.

The officials confirmed that the child had been administered polio drops but had missed some drives, thus testing positive for the virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Peshawar as a reservoir for the polio virus across the world.

The WHO has said that the virus found in some other parts of the world are genetically linked to Peshawar’s virus.

Due to threats to polio workers and attacks on security personnel, the polio campaign in KP had been suspended in January for the time being.

The ruling Tehrik-i-Insaf in KP has announced its volunteers would be taking part in the drive from Sunday.

During 2013 Peshawar had four cases of polio.
