HYDERABAD, June 23: District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman here on Monday held poor working of the Hyderabad Development Authority and Water And Sanitation Agency responsible for contaminated water supply to Hyderabad city, resulting in diseases.

Responding to the queries of Ibrahim Chishti and Naseeruddin Humayun, he proposed that a committee, having one member each from the City, Qasimabad and Latifabad Talukas, should be constituted to prepare recommendations for devolution of the responsibility to oversee the HDA / Wasa affairs to the district government.

The committee should also look into resources of two agencies and machinery available with them and present its report before the district council, Mr Rafiquzzaman suggested.

The district Nazim said that the civic agencies were working under the ministry of local bodies and he had no power to transfer its officials.

He added that he was nominated chairman, governing body of the HDA, but it had not been re-constituted.

He proposed that the HDA should only look after bulk supply of water whereas rest of its functions should be devolved to the taluka and union councils.

He said that closure of the Kotri Barrage was also contributing to supply of contaminated water.

Convener Nawab Rashid Ali Khan asked the district Nazim to call upon the HDA and Wasa officials to resolve the problem arising out of proximity of water supply lines to sewerage lines.

Earlier, Mr Chishti, Nazim, UC-7, Latifabad Taluka, said that since two motors were lying out of order at sewage pumping station of the HDA, his entire area was flooded with drain water following recent rains. He called for setting up of turbines in his area to combat the problem.

Nazim, UC-13, Latifabad Taluka, Dr Saifur Rehman, complained that contaminated water was also being supplied to the SITE area.

Q. Hakim urged the district Nazim to arrange the establishment of an ad-hoc setup to oversee the HDA and Wasa working.

Later Mr Chishti and Mr Humayun, Nazim, UC-8, walked out of the session and joined residents of their areas who held a protest demonstration outside the district council and blocked the road in protest against supply of contaminated water.

However, Latifabad Taluka Nazim Abdul Jabbar Khan brought two Nazims back into the session which was adjourned till Wednesday.
