Private firm to survey water position

MIRPURKHAS, Dec 14: The provincial government has hired the International Research Consultant (IRC) to collect correct data about the water discharge in Nara and Rohri canals, sources said.

Growers had accused the irrigation authorities of misguiding the Sindh government regarding the water discharge in the canals, they added.

The sources told Dawn that an IRC team would carry out the survey of Nara and Rohri canals and present its survey report to the authorities concerned.

Mirpurkhas District Bar Association president Shamsuddin Shaikh, Sindh Abadgar Board vice president Haji Abdul Ghafoor Mehar and general secretary Imtiaz Panhwar have strongly condemned the excesses of the chief engineer of Sukkur Barrage.

In a joint press statement issued here on Friday, they demanded of President General Pervez Musharraf to order a high-level inquiry into the matter and announce a relief package for Abadgars of the area.

MALARIA: Cerebral malaria is spreading fast here and in surrounding villages as the health department has failed to activate its anti-malaria campaign.

The increase in cases remains alarming owing to lack of attention of the authorities concerned. Many cases of falciparm strain of malaria are being referred to the Civil Hspital,Mirpurkhas, which lacks facilities to proper diagnose and cure the disease.

Even after the rise in cases, the department has not taken any preventive measure against the disease in the affected localities.

KIDNAPPED: Three armed persons kidnapped a young girl near Digri town on Friday. Sadruddin Nohani has registered a case under section 11-16, Zina Hudood Ordinance, with Digri police that accused Tamachi, Hussain and Qadir Bux— all by caste Nohani— had kidnapped his sister Ms Mehandi,30, from his house.

Digri police are probing into the matter.
