SIALKOT, Oct 11: An elderly woman was killed while a man sustained injuries in firing by Indian security forces in Sucheetgarh and Charwa sectors of the Sialkot working boundary, on Thursday evening.

Official sources told Dawn that Rehmat Bibi, 65, was sitting in the courtyard of her house in Charwa when some bullets hit her, leaving her dead.

Sikandar, 42, of Muhal Gujran village suffered bullet injuries when he was in the courtyard of his house. He was brought to the Sialkot CMH in critical condition.

Two goats were also reported to be killed, six houses and standing paddy crops destroyed.

The Indians continued firing till the filing of this report at 8pm on Thursday, they added.

The sources claimed that the Chenab Rangers turned the tables on Indians who fled towards their bunkers and took aim at their colleagues, injuring eight of them seriously.

The rangers thwarted another major Indian attempt of fencing Sialkot late last night, the sources claimed.

DISTRICT NAZIM: Sialkot district Nazim Mian Naeem Javed has directed the executive district officers (EDOs) to send their proposals regarding taxes to be levied in their respective departments before the formulation of the district budget.

Presiding over a meeting of the district heads of the nation building departments on Thursday, the Nazim directed the tehsil municipal officers (TMOs) to frequently visit all the sites where development work is underway so as to ensure the quality of material used.

Mian Naeem also directed EDO (revenue) to keep a check on the process of acquisition of land for the Sialkot airport.

Expressing concern over poor medical facilities, he told EDO (health) that complaints against shortage of medicines in emergency wards would land the officials concerned in trouble.

The Nazim was all praise for Sialkot police who arrested the culprits of Sialkot bomb blast and Daska ADBP dacoity and announced cash awards for the efficient police officials.

Taking stock of the agriculture sector, he asked EDO (agriculture) to ensure the availability of pesticides, fertilizers, seeds and farm machinery in the union council.

Meanwhile, Sialkot DCO Capt Zahid Saeed (retired) informed the meeting that furniture and equipment for the offices of the EDOs would be provided within the next two weeks.

KILLED: A woman was shot dead by dacoits on offering resistance in Chobara village, Pasrur, on Wednesday night.

Five dacoits reportedly burst into Mumtaz Bibi’s house and held up the inmates. They resorted to firing when Mumtaz tried to resist and fled firing in the air.

A villager Iqbal was seriously injured by the firing.
