Seven of a family shot dead

GUJRAT, June 19: Seven people, including a woman and her minor son, were shot dead by unidentified assailants in an ambush near railway track at Kharian in Cantonment police station precinct on Thursday.

Reports said members of two rival groups were on their way home by a car (Karachi PO-428) after attending a murder case proceedings. They had reportedly reconciled in court. Near a railway track, some motorcyclists appeared on the scene and sprayed bullets on the seven car occupants, leaving all of them dead.

The victims were identified as Shamraiz Iqbal, a resident of Chokorry Bheelowal, Lal Khan, Sajjad Husain, Badar Mohyuddin, Amjad, Robina and her son Iqbal.

Police claimed Shamraiz had enmity with several parties of the district, and he was on bail in some cases of murder and attempted murder. Police suspected he was the assailants’ main target.

Police said Shamraiz and his accomplices had come to a Kharian sessions court for reconciliation with Robina in a murder case.

Kharian ASP Dr Raja Abid reached the spot with a heavy police contingent and shifted the bodies to a mortuary for autopsy. However, no case was registered till last reports came in at 7:30pm.
