ISLAMABAD, Oct 11: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has demanded immediate dissolution of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) set up by President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

In a statement, a UK PPP spokesman, Fiaz Chaudhry, said NAB had been used by the government as an instrument of suppression and for gross violation of human rights.

“The death of a party activist, Mian Arshad, in NAB’s custody last week is just another example of how the Bureau is misused by the Musharraf regime”, he said.

Mr Arshad, a close confidant of PPP general-secretary Jahangir Badr, died in NAB custody last week. The government authorities said the death was caused by cardiac arrest.

The party alleged that Arshad was being pressured by NAB to become an approver against Mr Badr and make false statements against the PPP leadership.
