PESHAWAR, June 9: A juvenile court on Monday convicted a boy of drug pushing and sentenced him to five years imprisonment.

However, the court presided over by Shehbar Khan ordered that the boy be released on probation after he furnishes two sureties of Rs200,000 each.

The defendant, Abdul Rehman, son of Said Rehman, resident of Swat, was arrested by Hayatabad police on March 3, 2001. The police claimed recovering 26kg of charas from him.

He was charged under the Control of Narcotics Substance Act, 1997, and the Prohibition (Enforcement of Hadd) Order, 1979. At the time of commission of the offence, the defendant was 17.

Advocate Zulfiqar Chamkani appeared for the defendant and argued that he  was a juvenile at the time of occurrence.

He contended that the defendant was charged for the first time in a case and he deserved to be treated leniently.
